Down the beach last night and a mate caught a Cobbler.
I walked over and warned him that they sting and went and got some grips to hold onto it for him........just got the grips in his mouth and was removing the hooks and the fuckin thing flicked and barbed me in the hand!!!!
I was told that they were painful before, and now I can tell you first hand they weren't shitting me!!!!!!

Next time you get stung rub the wound on the

cobblers belly for about 30 seconds and get as much "belly-slime" into the wound as you can it takes that throbbing sting pain away then   rinse the wound in water. Ive only been nailed by them while catching them scuba diving so couldnt do the belly-slime trick but apparrtantly it works.

Hot water

Mon, 2014-04-28 12:10

Best thing is hot water to break down the protiens of the venom or if none available piss on it, does nearly the same thing but not as attractive.

Best way to hold one is thumb on top of the snout and fore and middle fingers in the gill slots, that way it can flick around and your hand is in the clear.

Cobbler sting solution

Mon, 2014-04-28 16:58

I have been told about the hot water or piss on the site of the sting cure for cobbler stings. Well from experience I can only say that when I got stung on my thumb 3 years back I tried the piss on it solution and it had no felt benefit, the pain was out of this world and I ended up at Peel hospital with a terrible smelling thumb and a nurse who was looking at me in a very strange way.

Got done the other week

Mon, 2014-04-28 17:06

Was reef walking up in Greenhead and trying to get a fish of the gidgee into the bucket. As the fish came off, my hand slipped with it and copped a barb through one of my fingers. Stung for about 30 seconds...then didn't feel a thing. Must have got lucky?

What was interesting though, is that the wound started bleeding again at lunchtime the next day....I know both flatties and cobbler have an anticoagulant in the venom...but was surprised given it had not bled in 12 hours + !!

I got stung through wading

Thu, 2014-05-01 19:41

I got stung through wading shoes last year. Holy crap the pain was crazy, the only thing that made it just tolerable was immersing my foot in an esky of really hot water. I spent the night on the lounge with the kettle along side and my foot in an esky re boiling water about every 30 minutes. Next time i'll just go to emergency and get a long lasting anaesthetic injection.

Old fart has been stung

Fri, 2014-05-02 08:49

poured a good brown vinegar on the wound and everything ok. His father taught him when walking in the shallows for cobbler to drag your feet, old fart always went cobbling bare footed.  I used to get so mad with him but he always said he never has stood on a cobbler or crab.
