Yanchep Lagoon under consultation of fishing ban

Apparently consultation is about to take place for closure to fishing?

On the first day of autumn, fishing was the only activity at the Yanchep lagoon. The weather wasn’t the best for the regular lagoon swimmers. They would not have been able to swim at the lagoon anyway due to the high number of people fishing there.

Over the past couple of years, snagged hooks and dumped tangled fishing line, have become a worrying problem for swimmers in the lagoon.

Both Yanchep and Two Rocks schools use the lagoon for their swimming carnivals and some parents have expressed their concern about the carelessness of some fisher people in this area.

One Yanchep resident said: “With the shark attacks in Sydney over the last three months we are being warned not to swim where there are people fishing.”

Do you think fishing should be banned in the immediate Yanchep Lagoon area?

Councils can and will do anything that suits them

Unfortunatly.

It's ironical really though. They ban 4x4 access to the secluded spots and force us to fish where swimmers and non-4x4 owners go. It wasn't long ago I fished Yanchep lagoon to the north and a nudie sunbaker had a shot at me for invading her privacy. Maybe we should ban them LOL.

Put up the flags I say and swim between them. I am sure the fishers will fish away from them. As for sharks; well, what can I say?

Yanchep Lagoon is notorious for it's current, especially on high tide. How is it safe to hold kid's carnivals in there? Is there more likelihood that someone will have problems in the current than with a killer shark?

Pretty soon there won't be any landbased spots

around Perth. We have seen the closure of the area near Spinnakers at Hillarys and I wouldn't be surprised if they did ban fishing inside the lagoon. You get a few NIMBYs protesting to their local pollies and talking to the media and it doesn't take long before they put a ban on.

I have lived in Yanchep all my life ,swam and fished the lagoon endless times, never got hooks or tangled line around me.The truth is all the people moving to Yanchep ,they come and love the place for the beaches and the laid back feel Yanchep has ,yet when they arrive they want to change things .There's not enough shops or parks don't like people fishing in the lagoon and so on ,the problem is easy fixed , Stop swiming in the lagoon and Piss of back to Perth or where every you came from ,and leave Yanchep the way it was .

I couldn't agree more. It was like some idiots who were living in Karratha who were protesting against an expansion of the LNG project on the Burrrup. What the hell. Why do they think Karratha was built but to service the LNG projects and Hamersley Iron.

And love it, would be a stupid idea to close it to  fishing.

But we are talking about councils.
