your v8 diesel economy
Submitted by roddo on Thu, 2014-09-25 18:46
Hi All
Im looking at buying a new 2nd hand vehicle to replace my current 4.8L nissan patrol the patrol is great but I need something with better range as the patrol is a pet/gas I don't get the best range out of the tanks 4-500km.
can anyone give me some of there economy figures mainly interested in those who tow over the 2.5-3T range as my boat weights 3.3T. we are looking at doing several trips up north next year so its time for a change.
the options im looking at are
4.5L turbo v8 cruiser probably a workmate or a troop carrier
6.5l Brunswick diesel in a patrol or cruiser
7.3L F250
my budget is 30-40K i would really like the F250 but most are around the 60 mark as it must be a dual cab.
what are your thoughts?
thanks

dont the new dual cabs,
dont the new dual cabs, colorado, d-max, ranger etc all rate in at 3.5t. think the basic models are 40k roughly.
edit slightly higher then 40k

i don't think it would be
i don't think it would be doing the 3lt engine much good towing that sort of weight as that's what it will be mostly doing as it wont be a daily driver. our rangers we have at work arn't that gutsy load the trays up with gear and there working pretty hard.

Fuel economy
Twin turbo 200 series diesel cruiser towing about 3 tonne on twin axle trailer get about 20 litres per hundred km's - if that helps?
so with 138 litre tank can maybe squeeze 650-700 km's out of it.
cheers

I'm also running the scan
I'm also running the scan guage. i reckon it's part the shit fuel we get up here and maybe justa bit of a dud out of the factory. i have a bull bar and roof rack fitted so i expect slight increases in usage but once coming home from perth intoa headwind i had it at 19l/100km with not very much on the roof rack at all, towing nothing. It's getting a tune and a exhaust this xmas but

Yer I got the new duel cab
Yer I got the new duel cab cruiser 70 series GXL, stock not towing, from Rockingham to Billabong used 100lt - 700km ( 14lt per 100km ).
I have now added 3" SS system and a chip, 2" lift and 33" tyres, will need to do another run to Billabong to see what the fuel is like, but loving the power the pipe and chip have given it, and it sounds sweat.

About 25-30% and the power band extends to the red line, product is Manta.
On paper, went from 150nm to 210nm, but I did'nt put it on a dyno.

V8 TT 200 series, towing 3t
V8 TT 200 series, towing 3t all up used to get around 22-24 litres per hundred km sitting on 100kmh, i recently changed exhaust to 2-3/4 inch x2 into a 3.5inch out the back with high flow cats - the 200 series come with 4 cataltic converters which just bog it down- my fuel economy is a bit better round town and now prob closer to 20 when towing.... but will take a while for the saving to pay for the exhaust :-(

V8 diesel cruiser
I tow a 3.5 tonne Cat.
Depending on your right foot/how many caravans you have to overtake and the wind I get 20-22L/100km
Arround town 12.7 at best
In travelling terms that means I leave my home in Rockingham at 2AM, fuel up for breakfast in Gero, Fuel up and lunch in Canavon then arrive before dinner in Gnaraloo/Coral bay/Exmouth
Without the boat the fuel light comes on arround 870-900km with 18 liters left
I just did a run towing a mates 2 tonne boat and from Canarvon to Dongara was 108 liters
The best part about the crusier is how comfortably it does it. Lots of extra grunt for safe overtaking and no loosing speed up hills. No gearbox overheating that some other so called 3.5 tonne rated vehicles can experience
The only thing it would benifit from is a set of airbags in the rear suspension. It a bit too soft and sags under load. I have had a set of polybags inside my springs for 6 years, 160000km and a lot of towing. Best $400 spent.

I just picked up a set from auto one, nothing flash and easy to install.
I run mine harder at about 17PSI when towing

I have a 13' TT V8 Cruiser as well. Towing a 2.5t boat i can get around 600-650km sitting on 100km in lockup, but my boat is fairly tall so has added wind resistance. Highway driving without towing i get around 1200km comfortably.
Wanting to changeout the exhaust with a Beaudesert one, will be interesting to see the comparison.
If your after airbags, i got mine from Malaga Springs and Suspension, bout $350, work a treat. Speak to Colin or Corey, they will sort ya out

Just brought a 14 vx cruiser wagon
and just done a 14.5k road trip, across the nullabour we were down to 9.7 ltrs per hundred kms..
so 1200 kms per tank easy as with cruise set at 113kph... Wouldn't buy anything else, just love the cruiser v8 tt diesel..

Is there a big difference
Is there a big difference between the single turbo and the twin turbo in power and economy in the cruiser.
Surely there are a few people with brunswick diesels and f trucks on here its all about the cruiser atm. Unless there figures arnt worth mentioning against the cruiser.

A observation
I did post about this once before ages ago but will again, a couple of mates have had over the years
80, series n/a ,- 80 series t/d aftermarket ,- a 7.3 f250, and to finish a- 200 t/d tt.
Towing boats from around 6.2 -7.5 ali and a 6.2 cat, we have noticed they all average around 20-22l/p/100
on long trips around 100kph , which kinda makes sense to me, cause even though the n/a 80 was only 4.2 litre you have to ring
its neck to do a certain speed , were the f250 did it so much easier , but your feeding a 7.3 litre motor!
I bet even a amorok with its highly effeicent 2 litre t/d motor and 6 speed tranny towing a 3.5 tonne boat ( if it were legal, )
would be around 20 l/p/100, and a 6 or 8 tonne truck with maybe a 6-8 litre engine would do about the same but
unloaded the truck would used 18-20 l p/100, and only change very slightly to 21-22 towing.
Its my unproven , unscientific therory, that everything in the towing universe revolves around 20l/p/100.

oil cooler
Take it how you want, but a transmition oil cooler will actually give you better economics when towing with an auto. I put one in my d4d td hilux and can tow the old boys tub loaded (2.5t) pretty well, around 16-18l per 100km. It stops the engine dropping gears to increase fan speed (more cooler air). It cost about $220, fits straight over your radiator, and took an hour to install. I reckon it paid for itself on its first trip to exmouth.
Also a mate has a 100 series cruiser with 6.5 brunswick to tow his 3-3.5t jackman. We/he only tows in 4th (manual ) and its sits on 100kmph on around 2100rpm. Would use aprox 16-18l per 100kms towing. The north hampton hills are no match for this thing, its a beast!

Recently towed 3.5 tonne to
Overlander Roadhouse [ Shark Bay turn off ]
Vehicle used was D-Max 3 /lte motor
Yeah had to drop back to 4th gear on hills but this thing can do 140 kph in that gear so no issues.
Nearly 9 ks/L or if you like 11/L to 100ks
This vehicle is Lic to tow 3.5 tonne...how about a Cruiser ?

Re: Isuzu D-Max for towing ?
by Nairana » Thu Oct 07, 2010 7:08 am
Towed abt 90kph, D- Max averaged 14.55 l/klm for the trip, probably about 1000 klm not towing.
Can highly recommend

You do realise that all these
You do realise that all these new utes have the same flaw with advertising..... if you tow 3.5t you are exceeding your GVM if you put any weight in your vehicle (including yourself).....
Cruisers dont have this problem....

that might be somewhat
that might be somewhat exaggerated but yeah they cant be fully loaded and tow their full capacity-personally Id rather that and manage the capacities myself than as with my older Hilux where the max tow weight is kept low.
Bear in mind also that the 200 is somewhat similar though to a lesser extent.
Kerb weight-2660kg
GVM-3350kg
This leaves 690kg for any accessories, fuel (130kg) towball download (300kg +/-) which leaves about 260kg for occupants and luggage.
I have been over this myself when on a long trip, last time I hooked the boat up with EVERYTHING for Coral Bay except people (2 adults 5 kids), 6800kg at the scrapyard scales.

Out Wide, you're getting way better than average !
I recenently towed a 2.5 tonne rig to Shark Bay behind my MY14 Dmax and by sitting between 95 and 100kph averaged around 19 litre/100k.
I can get it down to around 15l/100 by sitting on 80kph.
I know several people who tow with a DMax and all average around what I get.
Not doubting what you are saying, but you are getting a lot better than others with a DMax.

DMAX
MY14 Dmax tows my boat which weighs around 1.5T plus the back full with 600kg of gear and 4 blokes @12.5l/100
will do 100k up the hills and you can sit on 120 if you want but it reduces the economy so 100-110 is good

towing with 2008 rodeo
Just done a trip to Denham from Collie towing a 6.2 Jackman ali,1030km into real bad head wind all the way, used 180lts running at 100kmh in 4th gear on cruise control.Came home with empty ute at 100kmh in 5th used about 80lts.Mate towed boat home with similar Rodeo and used about 180lts.You need to put fuel in to tow boats,it's that simple.
