I wasn't going to post this pic, but seeing as there was discussion as to what a 100kg plus marlin looked like, figure I may as well post it.

looks definately over the 100 for sure, i have a pic of a 140kg black that looks different than that one as well, again it can be very hard to judge unless its on the scales

but this one weighed in at 114.8kg, yet looks every bit of that 140kg one. Maybe not as long, but looks a lot fatter.
Unless you are prepared to kill the fish and hang it on the lie detector, then really its a guess at best.

Spoke to him about this fish, same thing it died after the fight, couldnt revive it.
Nice tiagra it was caught on too.
2 and half hours i think he said the fight was. i think.

Just to explain why this one was hung, the guys boat died mid fight and they were unable to chase it and weren't able to swim it after getting it to the boat and had to wait for sea rescue. But as you guys say, its bloody hard to determine weights of big fish that's for sure.
That was sorta side on though.

catching any +100kg black marlin is good value.
Thats what I'll be hoping to bag next year. Or a big blue! Yeah, that'd be nice......

I had my first and only
I had my first and only marlin die ,we brought it in and filleted it and gave the guys around the park a feed ,they are good eating i was quite surprized.

why not keep it? They are perfectly edible.
Some people do throw them away which is a shame I agree.

Never eaten one, but they are very popular on the east coast and are meant to be really good. If its dead, why not eat it rather than feed the sharks..

Kind of the same reason you shouldn't eat big sharks. Not a good idea if you're either young, or pregnant. They're accumulators and as such can have lots of heavy metals.

yes i kept my first marlin, caught about 15 years ago now..... none e=went to waste, we ate the fish and i had the head mounted so it wasn't kept for nothing.
they are veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy good eating so none should be wasted, unfortuantly they do die, and instead of letting them go to the sharks why not keep them, as we did with pauls fish last year.
i would sooner share it around with humand than the sharks.
on the other hand yes there has been many times marlin are killed and wasted and this i never will agree on, i have seen at bermagui alot of marlin dumped at the tip after being weighed, and this is a discrasful waste.

Fish had died so bring it in rather than let it sink to the bottom..

Just something to note I don't think the heavy metals content of a fish of that size or even
up to a couple of hundred kilos is really an issue , maybe if you where eating granders on a regular basis
you would probably be having dramas at the airport metal detectors LOL , but on a serious note
gamefishing for billfish is always going to have the odd casualty , it's the nature of the sport,
as long as the fish is treated with respect and kept in good condition for the table I don't see
a problem . I wouldn't begrudge anyone for wanting to keep there first either , but these days thankfully most
are happy to watch them swim away .
My first was back in the early 80's off an east coast rock ledge and The Cronulla Sharks had more
chance of winning a grand final in the Rugby League than that fish had of swimming away, he tasted great.
Times have changed Thankfully.

Good Eating...
Yep, when I was stationed in Hawaii in the early 80's we always kept them. They are a good eating fish. Back then what ever the customer didn't want the deckies would take and sell at the market to top up his pay.

most of the marlin kept by the locals up there get farmed out to people with smokers and consumed with in days.A marlin that size is half the age of a 15 kg dhu so if you are worried about age or heavy metals then dont eat old fish.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?
