1st YFT

Finally got a YFT!
Saw a good bust up East of the Easter Group, complete with a couple of big big sharks. I was a bit hesistant about tossing a Zip Baits SSM120, but it got smashed, and the sharks were that busy with the bait that I managed to get this YFT out of it.
Nice work Skipper!

Good Work
Looking forward to some better pics. I take that it was a good trip then?

Albacore
Just had another look at the pic. That might be an albacore tuna. They have long pectoral fins while the yellows have really short ones. Taste just as good, if not better than yellow fin IMO.

Yeah was a great trip!
Albacore, interesting, they're pretty uncommon in WA waters, so I didn't even think about it. I had it picked for YFT with the colour and shape, it was a lot fatter than SBT, and with different markings.
Pete has some other pics that should help pin it down!

What colour was the flesh
My understanding is that YFT is red and Albacore is white.

Correct, if the flesh was red
you can cross Albacore off the list of possibles. Having said that I'm not convinced it's a YFT either. More pics may make it clearer.

Red
YFT and Albacore both have red flesh. I'm eating both of them at least once a week so I can vouch for that. Dogtooth tuna is the cleanest (clearest) tuna that I have seen; and even that has a pretty good tinge of red to it.

How about pink then ...
Albacore has beautiful white flesh, and is delicious to eat., with a delicate taste. Known as "chicken of the sea". Albacore tuna are low in carbohydrates, high in protein and Omega-3 "good" oils.
Colour of Raw Fillet:
Pink (paler than other tunas).
Texture/firmness:
medium/firm, softer than other large tunas.
Fat Content:
Medium to high.
Most people understand that there is a difference between canned "chunk light" tuna and canned "white meat" albacore tuna, but most people don't realize that not all albacore tuna are the same.
Albacore can differ greatly in taste, quality, and health benefits. This depends both on the size of the albacore, and how it is handled and packaged.

Good reading but....
Happy to read what you've put up Alan. Good info. All I'm saying is that I'm eating both YFT and Albacore a lot lately and side by side Albacore definately isn't 'white' compared to YFT. Lets agree on pink LOL. It definately goes 'white' when cooked though.

The shadowing doesn't help but i would say yft, just looking at the lines and the slight tinge on top. Look forward to better pics. Good fish anyway!

Pectoral fins...
...albacore have extremely long ones...they reach back to almost the tail...while those of a YFT are somewhere between that and the much shorter bluefin pectorals. Sort of a "mid-size" pectoral if that makes sense. Albacore are typically blue-backed and from memory have virtually NO yellowish colouration. Their eyes are also slightly larger than other tunas, in relation to the rest of the body. Also, they are typically found well offshore, and I don't mean a complex reef system like the Abrolhos. More like right off the edge of the shelf...we used to travel 90 miles or more (all night) out of San Diego to fish for them. Yellowfin are more consistent with dropoffs and offshore reef areas (like the Abrolhos).
Anyway, enough of the drivel, nice catch, Jamie, although my response was a bit late!

Hi Auslobster,
yeah funny you mention San Diego, it was on those boats trip pics that I saw a few of the albacore, and how long their pecs are!
