Just a quick comment on ballooning, most guys go for big gardies for bait. The balloon will alot of the time just skip it across the water. Now why couldnt you just put a big soft plastic or a peice of closed sell foam thats the same weight as a gardie on some gangs and use that instead? With gardies up around 12-14 bucks a kilo they are quite expensive bait considering half the time they arent even in the water.
yeah i know what ya mean about paying for big gardies they are expensive,iv never bought them due to that reason so i actually catch them myself.they are great fun on light tackle.we even use small tailor and whiting if you cant find the gards
squidy make a few for trolling which could be easily adapted for balooning, but they will cost as much as real gardies :p Wouldnt be hard/expensive to whip up a foam gardie and put a few weights on it tho.
Have seen guys up there using jigs under balloons when they get close to their bag limits. They reckon they wern't as effective as a real bait, and had only nailed one on a jig so far. The beauty of a gardie/tailor is the silver colour which reflects well. Also when the wind is gusting a bit the gardie will spend a bit of time on the surface before dancing across the water again. Have no doubt something like a halco trembler would work well under a balloon but at $20 per lure will stick to a gardie.
I think it might have been in a WA angler or some similar fishing mag where someone did an article on ballooning with soft plastics and it seems as though he was rather successful but sometimes those mags arent the most reliable places to get your info
