Valley Hill Rods are really on the up now. I had to sit on the waiting list for 8 months before I received mine. Excellent build quality and balance.

Valley Hill

When Yoichi Mogi puts his name, expertise, experience and knowledge behind a jig rod, you know it's going to be good. If found them very forgiving, longer and a bit heavier than others like the Jigging Master Powerspell and Hots.

It seems there are two distinctly different jig styles

JM and Hots with the shot light rod for power lifta nd crank

and VH, Smith, Carpenter and CW are heavier and a tad longer???? for more relaxed work.....softer rod tip as well

Any comments???

Jigging style

Most of the spin/jig rods I've seen ...Carpenter, Valley Hill, MC Works....are a bit longer than the Jigging master and Hots.....
Hard core Japanese jiggers I've fished with were using rods typically 5'6 - 5'10 and a bit faster in their action compared to the parabolic action of the jigging master and hots. In pracitcal terms, the shorter rods are easier to jig with and more user friendly fish fighting tools. I think the longer rods allow for a more relaxed jigging style to impart action......but if I had to chose, I would go shorter. It's a compromise...but I think good jig rods are the ultimate in compromise anyway...
The Japanese jiggers had a different jig style. They tend to use more of the centre-weighted sliding jigs which work well with a higher, more gentle, rythmic rod action than a short, high speed, power action. The longer rod will impart more zip in the jig but will be more tiresome to work for extended periods.

I'm trying to find a jig rod from demersals in 30-90m....Unfortunately all the excitement here in WA has been around our Hippo's ....so broom sticks rule.

I think KC has convinced me to go the Hots.....lighter than the Smiths....more balls than the Jigging masters and cheaper than a Valley Hill and Fisherman.

In your opinion would a parabolic action work better for light jig work on fish to 10-15kg????....fast tip....slow loading mid section.

Thanks in advance

I had a play with a Jigging

Wed, 2008-07-16 16:54

I had a play with a Jigging Master Powerspell 150 on the weekend. It was teamed with a Trinidad 12 and PE2.
It was an absolute pleasure to jig with and even better fighting fish. The JM200 has more grunt and may be better suited to what you want.....but for PE2-3, the JM150 will not let you down.....awesome rod.
