Crab munching bluey
Submitted by Jack Dawson on Thu, 2011-03-10 20:43
Hi all,
I decided to target my yearly blue today (I try to only keep one a year) and this was the result. After wafting a few crab bodies and legs down I spotted this fella under the wash (thanks to Ian from Flying Fisherman as my new polaroids made spotting him a whole lot easier!!). He was pretty cluey and would not take a weighted bait so I downsized leader and drifted an un-weighted crab down to him and BANG!
I estimated his weight to be about 10-12 kg's so not a big one and a great sized fish to eat.
Cheers,
Jack

Great fish Jack. You must do
Great fish Jack. You must do a bit of walking finding these fish. Lots of great spots down there off the rocks but most aren't easily accessed.
Good size to eat. IMO these fish taste crap when they get to big. Last big one I kept got fed to the dog, wouldn't keep a big one again.
Don't understand guys that spear the big blues, not the best eating and most you could probable pat before you shoot them.

Thanks for the comments
Thanks for the comments guys,
Sam, there are plenty of salmon around, that rocky bay in the back of the photo had a big school sitting in it all session, we even caught a few of the pesky things on bare hooks and crabs when they cruized through...salmon really are the blowfish of the south!
Jono, they do go hard, but if you keep their head up you can usually get the smaller to medium sized models up pretty easily, as for the bigger ones, I have literally been inches away from being pulled in on a couple of occasions!
Heinz,
I wasn't using the usual GT gear or heavy handline this time, instead I opted for a softer rod (7 foot braidbuster) and an old okuma EZ with 50lb toughline & 80lb leader with a 7/0 gamma occy. The fish was very lightly lip hooked so I reckon I would have ripped the hook out with the stiffer monstermesh and heavier drag setting.
They are great on the chew, one of my favorites, especially the smaller ones. The bigger fish (20 kg +) are a little tougher but still better than your average demersal.
