Crimson / Scarlet before ikijimi

Looks nothing like a red when it comes over the side but as soon as you ikijimi them they go all red and make you do a double take.
Still not absolutely certain that it is a Scarlet or a Crimson but it certainly wasn't a Red because it didn't have the groove on the gillplate and had a large splotch of dark colour on the wrist band that was absent on all the reds.
Anyone else had the same experience?

Maybe they were all Saddle Tail Sea Perches?
Here is a link to the most likely culprit. Unfortunately the fish id books we carried didn't differentiate between all the different sea perches, so I missed this one until now. Given the big blotch on the tail wrist and the remarkable resemblance to all the reds, this would get my bet for the likely culprit.
Like I said, we ensured they weren't Reds because the groove on the gill plate was missing, but there was no mention in the little fish id book about a blotch on the tail wrist for crimsons or scarlets, which we had asumed they were.
Ah Ha! Mystery Solved!
Here is the link.

Now I will start looking for a pic with the tail wrist showing to prove once and for all that they were all Saddle Tails and stop any doubting thomas' from suggesting otherwise.

Pinkies do the same
When we catch Pinkies we often get requests for pics and we allways spike them ( iki) and it stops the fish jumping around in their hands and the colours come out beautifully .
If your fish does come up and looks bland try spiking it before the pic as it really brings out the colour in fish .
Also remember to take your sunnies off as well as your hat and look for shadows and if anything will look like it's sticking up behind you .
A good fish deserves a good pic .
Try to get a level horizon as well .

Can't claim to be the photographer
Agree...not a good look.
I had to search for a pic of one of those Saddle Perch's and unfortunately this was the only one taken fresh out of the water. I agree not the best pic, but I only posted it to make a point about the ID issue, otherwise it would have stayed in the pile of not for publication pics we all have on our computers.
Spot on Mav about the ikijimi colour variation, I think the spike must relax the fishes pigment glands and floods the fish with colour.
Now if someone can tell me a way to ikijimi a squid / cuttlefish and avoid all the ink that would be appreciated.
