Cuttle fish
Caught this cuttle fish today off hillarys..first one i have ever caught. We were anchored up...chucking out heaps of burley..trying to get some herring. Then a shag came and started hanging around the boat..didnt have my ging on me...so we were yelling at it..doing the wave your arms trick, but it wasnt going anywhere. Next thing we see something chasing the shags legs....must be shark, no its a cuttlefish. Then the shag and cuttle fish both left our company.
Next thing i know our rod with a bottom rig is going off, and after a few winds a poxy wrassse bobs up to the surface abot 5ms away from the boat. Then all of a sudden, the killer cuttle fish is back. It was attacking the wrasse like no tomrw..very game as it was the same size as itself. So i screamed out to the mrs to tie a squid jig on. We dropped it in the water and he attacked that to..but that was his last mistake as now his sitting in my fridge...ready to cook!
Also spun out when cleaning it, at the size of the brown beak they have...it looks like it could take your finger off !

You're lucky the cuttlie didn't ink you instead of the squid,they are top shots and what seems like gallons of the black shit.Now I give them a good shake in the water to get it all out of them before bringing on board.
To tenderize it,freeze it for a couple of days,thaw untill its only just pliable,give it a bit of a kneading the refreeze.Whenever you want to cook it now its ready to go.
Old Italian crayfisherman told me that one years ago,its the only way to do occy and works well with squiddly diddly as well

Eating cuttlefish and squid
Old cook on the prawn trawlers put me onto Kiwi fruit mate. Just cut a kiwi fruit in half and rub it over your squid tubes,a couple of hours before you want to eat them..makes them nice and tender
I didnt believe her, then she rubbed a tube down and left it in the fridge for a day or so...and it had turned to white mush...then she asked me if that was tender enough for me! smarty pants

because they are so ballsy is probably why you see soo many cutle fish bones with shark teeth marks in em. nice catch, enjoy your meal

For someone that has never caught a Cuttly before,that looks like a decent sort of squid jig and not a cheapo

squid jig
Yes shorty she is a flash jig. When i first started squiding a was catching a few on the old 3 pack from Kmart..and then after reading some of the guys reports on here about using good jigs ....i went down to Tackle shack and invested in some good ones. I started catching a heap more then, you definetly get what you pay for. But these days i mainly use a fish spike jig, with a whiting on..and it out fishes the rest around hillarys.
Do cuttle fish like to hang around reefy areas..more than weed beds like squid??
