Renamed D9 when sold to the Dredging Industries of Australia, she was converted to a suction dredge for the excavation of the channels of Kwinana. Sunk in 1962 for unknown reasons and was then moved to the middle of CockburnSound where she is now located.
I was working on the jetty when the D9 went down what happened was they (the crew) had laid out explosive charges to get rid of some large rocks in the way of the channel they we dreadging to the Alcoa jetty. charges all laid good on firing (electricaly) there was an almighty bang on the barge, enquirey into accident (1 killed) found that there was a primed charge onboard barge current leak from dynamo exploder set charge on barge off. or possibility one primed charge left onboard barge possitive conclussion could not be found. search of old "daily news" news paper will give full story. As I have stated before on this site there is an old vampire jet in the sound approx 1-2 ks from straight out from caravan park
“Just to add to the D9 thread and show how WASSP a bottom scanning/profiling product that I tested on a 6.5m Cruisecraft performed. Although on a smallish boat and I hadn’t finished setting up to optimum you will see the 2D and 3D screenshots are pretty darn good. The photo of the FCV 585 is the sounder shot of the D9 at the same time.
Tell me guys I heard these structure side scan sounders are only good for shallow water? True/untrue? Went over the top of the Key Biscane on the weekend now that is something to see on the sounder.
regarding the hummingbird 798si I just put in , only had it in 20m max thus far it struggles and thats going at a whopping 10knts be a deadly weapon in creeks though ...mind you my settings are a stab in the dark atm...I imagine these more expensive units as above would work alot better...
On the WASSP system. Im personally yet to see the wassp running myself but was sent these images from a friend who wanted to show us what a commercial unit can produce.
The key Biscane would be very interesting. I wonder if it looks like a christmass tree of jigs.
Thats some great scan there southcity, love the 585 pick too. The first trip with my 585 I also went over the D9. Just a question regarding 585 pic, why does your pic not go all the way to the ocean floor and mine does. Has it got to do something with the gain and yes I know the gain is too high, it was my first time out.
After a bit of searching i found this arial photo of the D9 on a very clear day. I have seen the highest part a few times and it looks like a crane turret to me with a square hole in the top.
As far as i know there was never any dozzer on board. The barge was called Dredge no: 9, hence the nick name D9. "Also the Parmelia i think "
