We caught a few around from rotto trench down To along south coast while longlining, all much bigger than that. Tails around 2.5-3 meters long. Thresher as said
Yeah, specially when it was tail-hooked, and not by me for a change either.
That prick is the best-ever advertisment for Dunsbourough outdoor Sportz / wind-on Dave's wind-ons. It was on for 2 and a half hours getting triple-teamed by us till we got the f**ker up.
When this was on, it ws clearly going to be the last fish of the day. So somone was cleaning up the boat a bit, and while they were doing that, they unplugged the electric ... HOHOHO.
It was on the Miya Epoch Command 4, and once you do that, they lose the line count which is a little demoralising on a fish like that, but it also means you can only use the manual button anyway PFFFFT.
I was sure the Miya's drag had gone because the fish took so much line, and at will, but scary thing is there is still 20kg of drag on it tonite ;)
when at depth the long tail looked like a bill and i thought we had our first metro swordy. Thats what we we hoping for. Anyways it was a buzz to successfully cature such a large fish. If it wasnt for the three of us working together using a range of techniques of how to raise it we would have been there for probably 3 more hours.
Wether it lived is anyones guess but i know it was still alive when we released it and there was no gaff involved.
Now thats an unusual capture! You and Jamie seem to find the weird stuff out there. Still remember the short billed spearfish. And my weird ass cod that is actually tropical.
Bet there was a slight twinge of dissapointment when you realised it wasnt a swordy. I imagine tailhooked it would take a lot longer than if you were able to turn its head.
I wouldn't expect many WA anglers would have a tick against the thresher shark box. I believe hooking them in the tail is not that uncommon. Fish like that are another good reason to have harness lugs on deep drop reels imo.

Common threshers are possibly wider spread, which I think this one is (doesn't have the head notch of the big eye thresher).
