GT on popper - shallow bommie Cairns
Submitted by scuttlebutt on Tue, 2006-12-05 08:44
Been out to the reef again harassing fish with poppers. This GT took the roosta on the edge of a bommie in 6 - 8 feet of water. Awesome surface explosion and then had to chase it through the bommies for about 5 minutes on 50lb braid. Great fun!

Niiiiiice one mate, so how many poppers are you losing compared to how many you are landing? Looks very shallow alright.

Awesome fish mate, I already
Awesome fish mate, I already saw it on Caranx but still a good fish. Looks like you were luck not to lose him. What size was your roosta, it looks pretty small.

Thanks guys, I'm slowly
Thanks guys, I'm slowly starting to get some improving results with the poppers. When I started with the poppers I was losing two or three a trip but have been working on the technique - Max drag and keep winding! Also important - the standard hooks on the Roosta are too light for 50lb tackle. Have upgraded all my lures with Owner trebles. That Roosta is the small size, though next trip I want to use some larger ones.
cheers,
steve

Get yourself a haymaker and see how you go ;)
I'm going to do the upgrade thing on some of my lures and some that I plan to buy in the future. What is the easiest way to remove the split rings?

YOU NEED SPLIT RING PLIERS
??
with big ass split ring pliers.
the boys here in sg that target gts up to 50kg in places like the komodo islands use size 5/0 owner barbless (5660 STBL-66TN 4X-strong), and occasionally ridiculously large (up to 10/0) decoy trebles, matched with 300-400lb+ split rings and mono leader that starts at 170lb.
their line usually starts at 80lb too. but then again, they're aiming for 50 kg GTs.
you could also look at the Yozuri surface bull GT. Some people might recommend the river2sea dumbell, but its one that you'll probably break in half after every decent fish, cause of its design.
but then again, i have all this gear and have yet to land a GT =D =D =D
i'm just recommending what more experienced anglers have recommended to me. waiting for global warming to heat perth up so I can go popping off rotto for a 50 kg caranx =)

Assist Hooks
Have you tried Assist hooks like we use on jigs , I mentioned it to Seansurfy about 3/4 months ago , with crushed barbs they are fantastic for popper fishing GT's and other popper bashing bruisers .
would probably work out cheaper than going XXXos splits and big ass trebles .
DUO make a good split ring plier as well , handles 11H owner splits with ease and snips braid easily with their cutters , I got mine from Bluewater tackle , very worth while investment.
