Homemade Lures
Submitted by big john on Mon, 2007-04-09 20:33
Been busy making up a fresh batch (150) of leadhead jigs over the last fortnight based on 6/0, 7/0 and 8/0 Mustad jig hooks. Great lures for a variety of species and certainly economical when you make them in bulk. Anyone else make there own lures?

Materials
Cheers for the kind words guys.
The mould is cast aluminium. I made up a pattern using casting resin, and then had the pattern replicated in aluminium.
Nice clean lead flashing at $1 per kg from a scrap merchant is used for the casting. I got hold of a proper LEE Casting Pot from the US which makes heating and pouring the lead nice and easy.
Duralloy powder coating is used to give the heads a nice glossy fitting. The cast leadheads are heated to 180c and then dipped in the powdercoat for an instantaneous finish, heaps easier than mucking around with paint.
FIRETAIL is the tail material used (Campbells has it, along with the Mustad 34184 hooks) and is bound on with white C speed thread (rod binding thread). The binding is then coated with araldite to seal it in place.
Tails are then trimmed to a neat finish with scissors. Eyes are dabbed on the with the ends of two small paint brushes.
Jimbo I'm going to cast some more heads shortly as I'm thinking of selling some on Ebay, so if your keen you could always come around with some hooks/lead of your own and cast some up.
Only ever used white, just the way it is.

Poppers
Got my lathe going and have produced a few poppers , just have to hang hardware and paint them and then it's off to Loonies and the cod dam with them.
So far I have made them from 30mm to 300mm long

Timber
What timber are you using for them Mav, and are you using a full through wire construction?
Hey Shizz, when I get a chance I'll pop down to grab some more jig hooks.

G'day big John
I was going to send you an email or pm asking if you could recommend some wood and also tips on turning , got some Jarrah , pine , wandoo and some sort of hard wood , to get me started .
Yes full thru wire construction , don't want any excuses for losing a fish , hell the little 40mm poppers are for targeting Murray cod to 15 kg and Yella bellies to 8 kg.
Planning a trip soon so will give you a call to see if you can make it along with us.

They'll be getting plenty of use around the Mackerel Islands from 2008-2010.
Time to get serious with the boat shopping now.
