Jurien Blue Marlin
Submitted by seasport on Mon, 2011-01-31 19:25
Caught on a Richter HUKA L, Rob and Dwayne are born locals, Saturday was there first ever attempt off Jurien to catch a Marlin. Weather was awsome until that line squall everyone is sprussing about hit us on the way in. There were mini tornados forming everywhere, they recon the extra wieght in the boat was a winner.

I dunno, maybe I am out of line on this forum, but it just seems a shame to kill such a magnificent animal unless necessary?
That being said, absolutely fantastic catch. Just would have been nice for it to have been tagged and released if possible.

Yep, agreed it was prolly knackered.....still a shame to kill a great animal, but as fishermen, I guess that is part and parcel of fishing for these monsters, and that is the holy grail.
What sort of age would a beast like that be?? I presume they grow pretty quick?

Asw others have suggested its way younger than most of your demersal species and certainly not an endangered species.
Great way to open your Billie account. Bet those blokes are well and truely hooked now.

A fish that size is about the same size as a 30 to 35cm dhu
And i would eat half one side of it on my own if smoked correctlyI wouldnt feel bad if i kept one for a feed.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

and less get eaten by sharks during capture. Smoked marlin is great eating. Striped marlin smokes up better than blue tho. jmo.

Fair go, one fish in how many years. The fish was definately not wasted, several families wil be enjoying this fish. I personally have releaesed all the billfish I have caught, however, this was a first for our community after alot of hard work to get our FAD program up and running and prove there is a game fishery off Jurien plenty of people who will maybe never see one of these fish got there chance. Top effort I say,

They have nothing to explain as far as i am concerned.
If someone takes a marlin that is the same age as a small dhu and feed a few families then that is just good economics allround. That means the people that get some dont go out and catch a feed themselves. One marlin saves 20 dhu is a win no matter what way you look at it.Before people pick on these guys think about how many of you have had a sambo full of eggs sharked then gone for another drift to have the same thing happenThink about how many of us have put a spanish flag on as a live bait for a mackie. The perfect size live bait for a mack is two to three times older than this marlin. How many of us have drifted a lump in 50 plus meters and skull dragged small demersal after small demersal in the hope of catching one size oneHow many of you have left a blowie on the jetty to die a slow death or worse played footy with it.Sh@t i have seen people pull the claws off undersize crabs and thrown them back to die a slow death.Well done on the fish boys and dont take any notice of the knockers as they over their fishing career have no doubt done far worse than take a marlin to feed the masses.I know i have. The thing is if you learn from it or not.

No 'knockers' on this thread that I can see, majority of crew fairly envious of the capture and congratulatory.
Unfortunately the two anglers in question have been ruined for life now, they think the billfishing game is easy peasy.

fantastic capture will be one
fantastic capture will be one to remember for a very long time. by the way this isnt aimed at you at all but have to say it
a couple of weeks ago someone caught there first ever tiger shark off woodies jetty he copped a hell of alot of abuse for keeping such a big animal and was frowned upon even though is was eaten by many people i dont see the difference here but this seems to be perfectly fine.
again this isnt aimed at your great catch its aimed at all the people that wrote bad comments on the other thread and decide that this is so much better.

difference is this is legal!
After doing a bit of reading mate (and with the references from carcasmo) it turned out that tiger sharks are in fact included under the whaler shark family and as such keeping a tiger shark of that size is illegal.
Ok, so it might have been gut hooked. But if i keep a dhuie or snapper during the ban that was gut hooked does that make it ok? If so it just becomes an excuse for anyone to say "oh, it was gut hooked". .
Sorry but this has been bugging me since it was locked, raising awareness about the fishing laws should be part of what this site is about. I do a bit of shark fishing and wasnt aware that keeping such a catch was illegal (not that I would).
Would be good to talk about this more in a seperate thread but only with the approval of moderators after the last one was locked.
An awesome catch and sorry to seasport for hijacking such a great thread. Like I said though, the difference is this is legal.
Congrats to the angler!

Huh?
Attached is the eligible species list from the GFAA website.
http://www.gfaa.asn.au/html/3eli_01.htm
A tiger shark species is defined as Galeocerdo Cuvier and Whalers are Carcharinus spp.
Ive caught and weighed many sharks in the past including Tigers and Whalers in sanctioned comps - Ive not ever heard that this may have been illegal?

Different
As you say Lastchance they are different but do appear to come under the same rules in the metro.
Tiger Shark is the Galeocerdo cuvier which isnt a whaler but is in the same family.
If you check the link it is the Family Carcharhinidae that have the new limit.

Are you saying i am old
Mate?I will need to come up a couple of weeks early and practice fishing with mono again. The last time we fished it we had all the Gt gear rigged ready to go and only spent half our time fishing the comp.We were going to fish sails for the duration with a bit of macks thrown in.That was the plan until someone caught a few sails and we figured it was a bit to hard to catch them so went fishing the bottom instead.I think the boat was called tara it was an ugly green thing with a massive donk and a couple of even uglier crew.lol

No problem
Heaps of billies are caught and released each year which makes us anglers have a warm and fuzzy, but we all know that no matter how long you swim them if they 'swam (sank) off strongly' there are some that dont survive. I reckon there is absolutely no problem keeping a billfish of any size or capture number.
They are just a little difficult to get into the Webber and they need heaps of alfoil!
There is nothing more inspiring than seeing an iconic fish such as the Marlin up close, see how big its mouth actually is, fixed pectorals on the Blacks, height of the dorsal on the Stripeys etc. I dont think those guys fully realise the capture they had achieved - we will all remember the boys in Jurien that caught that big Blue in 2011!

rob and dwayne, was out there the same day in jurien trying before the front came in, have been trolling for years out at the rotto trench, with no luck, but can tell you if this year, i hook in and boat a beaky unfortunately this fish wont swim another day, i remember a day at coral bay and captain bernie had to bring a large fish to shore due to having a heart attack, huge fish the front inloader was at full stretch and the tail was still on the ground, this certain fish had one path and that was the offal pit at coral bay tip, very sad but the way it falls sometimes, and before the knockers join in i will put photos up if needed but i hope it wont come to it

Lets put some balance in this post!
I've been following this post since it's inception and I think it's time someone brought some balance to it's content. Yes, it is fantasic that we have the opportunity to pit our wits against these magnificent billfish in "metro" waters. Unfortunately the devastation and grief the La Nina weather pattern brings to the north east of the country is what provides us with this rare occurance of Marlin so far south (its got bugger all to do with any FAD programme). My ears are already ringing with the derision and critisism that reaction to my comments will bring but here goes. There are numerous reasons why billfish are viewed as the pinnacle of gamefishing, their rarity, fighting qualities, and the skill required of the angler, skipper and team to name but a few. To view them as "beaut marlin steaks" or "yummy smoked marlin" leaves me bemused. Are there so many of you that are unable to catch a feed that you have to resort to killing a billfish? Or is the hunter gatherer mentality so prolific it clouds your sensibilities? The justification that has been repeatedly used regarding the inevitable death of a fish after a two and a half hour fight is so off beam it beggars belief, or perhaps it is ignorance or misinformation on how to simply revive the fish. Simple research on billfish recapture statisitics will reveal the truth as would reading magazines such as Bluewater or Marlin Magazine with their numerous columns on recaptures of granders years later, sometimes thousands of miles away! The first rule of reviving and releasing any billfish regardless of size is DONT DRAG THE BLOODY THING INTO THE BOAT just to get your ugly mugs in a photo. The damage you do to their spines and internal organs is the single greatest contributing factor to their untimely death, FACT! Unless its a "rat" under 60 or so kilos and you've got a proper transom door at water level to slide them through, do what the pro game boats do, take your photo of the fish while its in the water prior to release. To those of you that are back slapping and high fiving over a fish of this size on 50 I suggest you visit the IGFA website and see how unimpressive a capture it really is! There are millions of dollars invested in boats, gear and research for tag and release gamefishing in Australia, do we fisho's in Perth really have to portray ourselves with such a redneck mindset to the rest of the gamefishing community? OK start screaming at me!

I whole heartedly agree with most of your post
But i also dont see why these guys should get frowned at for taking one either. As long as it didnt end up wasted. It is also a shame that Queensland has suffered of late but we can only control our actions and take advantage of our weather while it is here. All of the release parts of your post apply to other fish as well if you dump a fish on a hot deck and take 5 mins ripping at its face trying to get a 10 cent hook back so you dont need a new rig is just as bad.All that aside i still stand by the fact that if (and i say if) i ever take one it will make very yummie smoked marlin steaks and not a gram will be wasted apart from the bones of cause.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?
