Jurien Marlin and more

Jurien Marlin and more

Last week I went to Jurien for three days fishing with the target species being Marlin. I towed my boat from Safety Bay to Jurien Bay with the anticipation of realizing my fishing dream of catchilng a 'game fish' and ticking off one of my fishing goals, all based on my newphew' (who fishes out of Jurien) excited prediciton of catching a Marlin based on local knowledge.

The first day we had a Marlin hook up, but no actual landing, but the non target fish pulled in sort of made up for the lack of Marlin....this included 15 tuna and 4 Dolly fish (all released). During the quiet time we did one drift on a lump for 5 minutes and hauled up two dhuie's for the nights dinner.

Day two saw a sad day....still no Marlin....but damn those non targets.... tuna (14), Dolly fish (2) and Snapper (a shabby 7kg) and good size Bulchin. We had to bench one of our lure's because it was producing too many Tuna and making our arms sore...every time the lure pulled in a Tuna it was wasting time that could bring in a Marlin. On the A-Salt Weapon this in an unheard of problem, and getting large numbers of fish (by any name) is not a normal occurance and one I would normally welcome....but not on this trip.

Feeling a bit disappointed at having to go a third day and do the hard yards in an attempt to pull in the prize of the target fish, we again headed out early...... one Marlin being all it was going to take to get us home and heading back to Perth. I was feeling confident this would be the day after 5 mins of trawlilng bringing in a 20kg Mackeral and shortly after another 10kg Mackeral. This was the first Mackie for the trip. While hauling in Mackeral it was sureal to be eye-balling a Marlin who was literally within gaffing distance off the back of the boat. It was teasing us just as we were teasing potential hook up's with 'teasers' dragging behind the boat.

By midday, still with no luck, we were starting to get a bit dispondent...was this trip not going to produce after all the anticipation. Then...."WE'RE ON". The line screamed out, and I thought the Mackie was big. How good was it too see that magnificant fish hit a lure at pace then launch out of the water doing what Marlin do best...the acrobatic and athletic dance that only further adds to the excitment of catching this incredible fish.

Two and a half hours later, and after it took us on a four mile road trip through its domain, we finally landed the Prize. Both of us were exhausted (the Marlin and me) but the memories will live with me forever.....until next time............

Had an awesome trip.

All this good fishing and good reading is making up for the lack of it through the jigging season...

Great to get the target species. Sounds like a fun/frustrating way to get there, but you got there LOL.

2.5 hours on any fish is a great effort let alone after 2 days of nil fish.

Massive effort mate, well done.
