Hope you filled that with water and kept them cold. No point catching and killing good fish if you don't look after them. I assume you would have, but just a pointer. Couple of good size dhuies there.

if u fish for a feed you would

wen u catch ur fish u should ike jime them in the brain - then bleed them by cutting their neck - then put em in a ice slurry - you compare the quality of a fillet that ive dispatched and stored - to the quality of a fillet that you havent bled and you'd be suprised - mine would be clear and firm - yours wwould be soft and discoloured - mine would fry up moist and flavoursome - yours would fry up dry and crappy

three definate ways to treat

Sun, 2009-08-02 09:06

three definate ways to treat a fish after catching, iki , bleed and ice slurry, as said it keeps the flesh in pristine condition as others have found out after trying this method for the first time. A thread was put up a while ago about this sort of thing and it changed a few peoples way of dealing with their catch for the better

bleed it separately to the slurry

Mon, 2009-08-03 22:30

As others have said I also Ikki then bleed in a bucket of water then wash and rince and into an ice slurry. Blood does not then get into the flesh at all.
Your fillets will be 100% better than not bleeding the fish. Another tip is to initially lay the fish upright so any remaining blood will gravitate to the belly of the fish not in the shoulder where the flesh is at its best.

Have to agree Russ & Sandy,

Tue, 2009-08-04 13:41

we do the same.  Its really funny watching other fisho's cleaning their dhuie and you can quite clearly see they haven't spiked, bled then ice slurry.  Their flesh is not white, you can see the blood thru the flesh, clotted blood.

catch, spike, bleed & ice up!

Mon, 2009-08-03 22:44

Cutting a fish any where can start the bacteria process but if your catch is iced down the bacteria or spread of infection is nulafied!

I personally, catch, spike, bleed & ice up (no slurry)....makes a huge difference and i've tried all ways!

** WA Fish Catch Care info from the Fisheries, **

All fish intended for the table should be bled by cutting the throat or gills area.
This improves the eating quality. Fish to be kept whole should have their gills and guts
removed.

To prevent spoilage and drying out, store your catch in a wet cotton or hessian bag in
the shade, in an esky containing an ice slurry (two-parts ice to one-part seawater) or
in a portable freezer. Fillets should be placed in waterproof plastic bags to keep the
flavour in and the water out
