My biggest Samson Fish
Submitted by Daniel Westerduin on Thu, 2015-03-26 07:33
I've just recent moved down to Albany to live. Anyway been out only a few times in the boat mostly more exploring than fishing but a little amount of fishing each time. Already found lots of new good ground but not much demersal fish landed yet, though lost a Dhu already at the side of boat. Had a few unstopables. Found a few Swallowtail and Breaksea Cods. Got a few Sambos in the 80cm-120cm range. Then I got the biggest hardest longest fight with a Sambo I'd ever had. I'll let the pic do most of the talking. I didn't have anything long enough to measure it proper but nearly as big as me and that heavy I couldn't lift it off the ground.

This capture was a complete
This capture was a complete solo effort, to land it I tail roped it then sort of dunked it down in the water then hauled it up and over the side. To take the pic I slid the fish half into position focused on the back seat section. The camera/phone was held in a rag as a cradle on the front seat, then used a 10 second timer.

I was using a Stella 20000 with 60lb braid and a Terez 40-100lb rod. Using a whole herring for bait.

Cheers for the comment
Cheers for the comment fisho's was stoked with this capture. The only down side I thought was it died before I could try and put it back. Taking the pic solo took a bit of time. Anyway I got it home covered in wet towels and ice so it kept okay. No one else was home and I really struggled to get it back out of the boat. I had to half slide it up against the side, then tail rope it again then jump out and haul it out using my full body weight. Surprisingly when cleaning it I found the meat to be quite firm and white mostly. There was a mall section around the stomach that didn't look as good so kept that for berley. I froze quite a few packs and tried some two days later. It was really good seriously, I had been told before that southern Sambos tasted better/good but didn't really believe it until now. I definitely will keep more down here in the future.

Good to hear it was ok on the plate and all of it didn't just go in the burley bucket.
Nice one.
