bit far south

bit far south

Went out with my better half (Darlene) and a mate today about 40km off rockingham to try and find some new ground. Was a rough ride out and the drift was pretty quick for the soft plastics but Hamish and I stuck with the plastics and Darlene used the bait. First drift I nailed a 8 kilo duhie on the baby elf paddle tail. put up a great fight on the light gear and was a great way to christen the new xtreme cooler. We thought it was going to be a red hot day as we had only been fishing five minutes but it ended up being hard work getting anything else for a while tried a few more spots with not much luck so headed back to where I got the duhie by this time the drift had changed so we couldnt get a good drift over the duhie spot but a extended drift saw Darlene land a nice BB and just as the SW wind really started kicking in we drifted over some coral ground that was holding a heap of fish. Tight lines was the call from Hamish and he said to Darlene this is your time to shine well not even a minute pasted before Darlene had a solid hit and she was on, a good tussle at the bottom with some good head shakes and we were all calling different fish Darlene called it for a sweep or (daily double as we call them on our boat) Hamish called it for a snapper and I called it for a queenie when we saw colour the call was a big black arse then as it got closer we didn"t have a clue until it popped to the surface and it was a huge suprize a sweet lip. well what was ment to be our last drift turned into 3 more drifts over the school of fish but with two drift anchors out and a drift of 1.8knots it was hard to get a touch so we called it a day one hour later than we should have, a relatively wet ride home but great to get Darlene out fishing again shes got the bug again which is great for me because now I have a full time deckie providing we can get a baby sitter for our little man.

Just wondering if anyone had heard of sweet lip being caught this far south I thought the furthest south they come would be Dongara and if they are this far south what else may have come with them maybe Darlene might get a coral trout next time lol wouldn't put it past her she's got the fishing luck and Hamish well he just needs a little more luck

Sun, 2011-01-16 22:04

Nice fish there mate. I do most of my fishing out from dawsville and ive caught quite a few redthroats.Ive been getting them as far back as 2007. Always around the 40m mark and always on the same patch of ground. There have been days where they have been a pest as they are on one of my dhuie spots. Mighty yummy bycatch tho.Gotta love those warm water currents.

Sweetlip. You'd be stoked to get one that size anywhere. I know a bloke in Margaret River who has caught 3 fishing out from Prevelly, fair bit south from Rocko so who knows how fair down they come. Good old leeuwin current

Wouldn't say it flattened out

Mon, 2011-01-17 11:27

Wouldn't say it flattened out but it did calm down around lunch for an hour or so was still a lot of chop and white caps and I think the slowest drift we had was about 1knt so wasn't the greatest fishing weather but still managed a couple of keepers. I think we were the only stupid buggers out there didn't see another boat all day

Mon, 2011-01-17 08:25

I think it was Whitey that mentioned if you find one down south, then there are quite often more of them on the same patch. They apparently like very specific bits of reef. So, if you have the coord, might be worth trying from time to time to see if any more pop up.

Cracker of a fish though. I thought most of the ones caught more south were on the smaller size (certainly ALL the redthroat i've seen at the Abrolhos are small)

Possibly so, but he mentioned

Mon, 2011-01-17 10:46

Possibly so, but he mentioned it was due to the ground. I.e. they only like certain ground this far south, so if you find the right ground, then there could be more whether they be schools or individuals with the same preferences.

I was told that red throat

Mon, 2011-01-17 13:53

I was told that red throat inhabit the same ground as Red Emporer.

I know when fishing the monties, whenever we hit a patch of 'em everyone was tuning in for a big Red to hit.

That is a stonker by the way
