Manoeuvring in close.

Thu, 2010-11-25 09:48

Hi Ice ....I was watching this moving around Hillarys the other day and it looked like it she was a bitch to manoeuvre ?

Lots of horse power yes ,but as both outboards are very central on the transom ,it had very limited turning ability ......especially compaired to the cat that this one is replacing.

Add to this a very flat hull and a bit of wind and she was struggling to turn in a reasonable distance .

Your thoughts ?

Some of our skippers are still getting use to it compared to the cat and our larger vessel. Yes does have a lot of windage due to small/narrow hull and collars system.

10 metre

Thu, 2010-11-25 11:26

Went for a run on Rob Kirby'y personal 10 metre Naiad before his company started to put our [Carnarvon Sea Rescue] one together and all I can say that being highly impressed isn't coming anywhere near being able to describe it.

Counting all the new boats being built for thee groups there is only one cat, the rest are either Air riders or Naiads which number the most. Bussellton,Leeman, Geraldton and ours are under construction and Kalbarri and I think Hopetoun have just received theirs. Shark Bay have recently commissioned their Air Rider.

Also why are a lot of the eastern states rescue groups buying Naiads and not cats any more, the same goes for South Oz fisheries taking 4 to replace their cats as well, must be something there?

can't wait to see the new rescue boat for Leeman have a friend that is in seas rescue there (as we are)  and they are excited.  As they bought the old Vail  from cockburn sea rescue, spent $50,000 on her.  They are excited as well.

Sea Boat's

Thu, 2010-11-25 12:05

Fair enough , I'm sure they will fit the role of a fast response rescue vessel and from what I've seen of them getting around in open ocean conditions the ride looks great.

Was just supprised at there apparent lack of steerablity at low speed in the breeze .......was like watching a surf boat with half the crew missing trying to turn around.

11.3 metres long , with twice as much boat above the water line as below as soon as they slowed below (say 6 knots ) the wind had them all over the place.

Guess they aren't for cruising the harbour though !

One very important fact with these boats is that the driver needs to complete a aggresive driving coasre and fast boat handling cert. They are a handfull and honestly not for the faint hearted, i think once the drivers get used to the boat you'll be supprised at there close quarters handling..

Driving

Thu, 2010-11-25 14:13

When a new Naiad is delivered to a Volunteer Marine Rescue Group they get a chap from Albany, who is a gun on them, to run all the skippers through a course on how to handle them at low and high speed.

At this moment in time a set of standards is being drawn up that requires certain qualifications to be met before you can be accreditted to drive  Naiads.

Is there a similar accreditation for the airriders?

High speed vessels

Thu, 2010-11-25 14:37

Pretty sure the accreditation will cover all high speed vessels. Not sure who does the training on the Air Riders.

Not sure if the Air Riders are any where near as fast as the Naiads. Ours will have twin 300 Yammies and would expect something like 45-50 knots. On the ride in Rob Kirby's with twin 350s we got it up to 57 knots without really trying, 40 knots straigh across and back on Cockburn sound with a full on sea breeze of around 25-30knots and not a drop of spray inboard

Insurance

Thu, 2010-11-25 14:53

Carnarvonite  ...does this have any impact on your insurance ?

All the insurance company's seem to have a cap as far as speed goes !

Will this cause a problem for the rescue fraternity ?

We are covered by the same policy that covers all FESA and SES vollies while on duty either in training, public demos or in actual rescue situations it is up to us to ensure all our skippers for the Naiad are up to that standard.

FESA Training

Thu, 2010-11-25 15:49

although we are not part of FESA they have offered to give our skippers a 2 day course on the Naiad s they have had them for a while and know the do's & dont's. All our qualifications are inhouse.

great to know they can get out there quick

Thu, 2010-11-25 12:42

for $40 a year to be a member I think it great there is good gear to come save your butt if mother nature give you a kick back into reality.

After poor Graham Stewart (RIP) drowning last month I have ordered a Stormy self inflating vest....to close to home

at least you have a fraction of a chance to be picked up in a fast rescue boat if you end up in the drink.

that aside...

Agree with Indiana though....follow one back into Rous head and up the harbour a couple of weeks ago....handled like a skateboard on ice at really slow speeds...but I guess thats not hugely important with 700 pony's out back

Off the track of the thread but very good point about the self inflating life jacket. Was too close to home & i for one will be wearing one from now on if going out alone.

And yes awesome boat & great to see on the water

Look

Thu, 2010-11-25 16:09

I had a look at it when it was being built in Rob's factory, though it wasn't quite finished then. Also had a sqizzy at the Water Polices new 10 metre one as well.

Did you get auto pilot fitted or did you go away from the Furuno package that all the new VRMA boats are fitting. eg FLIR camera, Furuno navnet set up, 2 x 10 inch screens, radar, sounder and GPS plus all the hook ups through the ICOM  radios

Initially we were aiming for a 14.6 Naiad with twin diesels along the lines of Lion Red, Aucklands big new rescue boat but the dollars we would have had to find were too far out of our reach. On its delivery they were doing something like 10 knots in 10 metre seas, mind boggling!!

No auto pilot

Fri, 2010-11-26 11:37

no auto pilot but have the furuno set up as you stated. We also had an additional 27mhz and vhf radio fitted so we can monitor the emergency channels as we as normal channels. I will send you a private message with some pics of the interior set up
