It gave up on the last 30m, the body did suffer.....so did KC back the next day LOL

Awesome fish and effort Kasey.
Was wondering if you would be able to keep it quiet until the mag came out. Saw mention of the record application in the AAA minutes as well.
Your article will be a good read as well.

Big Bass Grouper!
I showed this pic when i first took it to one of the big boses at Furuno. He does alot of fishing and I knew he would spin out. I didnt say i took the pic it I just said "46kg Bass Grouper on jig " he said after looking at the picture....no way Ryan thats 46kg.....I then said its my friend/on my boat and I took the pic....."he then said OK well then its for real"
KC, adrenalin was pumping fast, I said you may only have one crack at holding it but i'll be quick with my camera. That he did, I only got two good pics one being the front cover and the other the insert full page. After that he lost his strength and I tried to help him but we both struggled to lift the fish & get a good picture. After knowing I got a front cover it didnt matter!
Bloody awesome fish and a New State record, weighed with my digital scales then we did the certified ones for the record and I think it was 200grams in it. Spewin it missed the Australian record by a few kilos only (i think 48kg)
Kasey is a very dedicated jigger and a good fisherman. I admire his jigging pursuits and we had an awesome 3 months of nailing many quality fish on jigs!
Gonna take a while to beat that baby, I've got a big 130l plus Ice box on my boat and the head & tail couldnt fit in only the stomach when we"stuffed it it" LOL
Thanks for the comments guys!

regs!
Yeh I went through all this with the Fisheries to clarify deepwater species & regulations etc when i started targeting these fish a while ago!
The WA Fisheries Officer admitted at how the rules arent clean cut for understanding the deepwater species especially the 1m (30kg) rule. The bag limit is an umbrella/combined of all these species ie harp/bass/blue eye /grey and only 2 fish per person!

Just rang him back
to hit him up for some ground to try and he told me to pi## off and hung up on me because i had told him that all the deep fish over a meter or 30 kg had to go back .Maybe they should just make that the blanket rule and take all the confusion out of it then K C s record will stand a long time
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

A quick check says bass
A quick check says bass groper is Polyprion moeon and the 30kg limit applies to Epinephelus species. Might need one of those comprehensive ID books to check what is and what isnt allowed to be kept?

I think the rules are easy
I think the rules are easy enough to follow.... as long as you know the species name (well, genus) You dont hear about the deepwater ones as much though, so i'm pretty clueless on species names. Common names can be pretty confusing with Epinephelus sp. (I.e. a lot, or most are known, perhaps elsewhere as groupers).
Ryan, I'm guessing gray-banded cod is indeed Epinephelus?

that is what i was just saying
it is Polyprion americanas or something along those lines which is not protected.I am not questioning your integrity on the matter just clearing it up in my own mind.Is it americanas or the one that Hlokk called it?

I think it would be
I think it would be americanas going by the link posted below. I told you it was a quick check :p.
Though fishbase says they dont live here. Though, that map isnt always 100% coverage. Hopefully Ryan can elaborate when he gets a chance.
Anyways, as Ryan mentioned, bass gropers are of the Polyprion genus, and its only cods (the Epinephelus genus) that are protected. Any q's on the specific species, I dont have a clue.

That fish would be more
That fish would be more then 70 years old, what scares me is people putting it on front covers of friggn magazines, there is no science on these suckers out of Perth, I urge and plead with guys careful what ya do, please, all this talk and happy giving info will shoot everyone down, and yes before ya make claim to a record, i know guys who have been fishn for these fish for 30 years, it isn't new, sadly now it is no secrete and a free for all all for glorification and money.
