wot else did yahs catch at north barge my dad n bro wen there last sunday and caught a 3-4 kg skippy a nother good skippy ,pink snapper and swallowtail
??????
Nice fish, it looks like what we call a White Sea Bass(not really a bass, but a member of the croaker family) here in Southern California. Catch them up close to shore in shallow waters near the kelp beds and they go up to around 60 lbs+ with the average 20 to 40. They love squid (seabass candy bait)and are very good eating.
30kg mulla & crashing bait, nice fish for the Sound Rockpom! I've got them to just over 20kg but admitingly I dont put in the hours like I do for pink snapper. I got a mulla a few nights ago that went 15.5kg but had a body of a 12kg but had a barra fat body and plenty of food in the guts!
Dont mind the Barge & Sound mulla for a FRESH chew, pass on the Swan ones however!
I think ive read somewhere that inside the head of them, around the top of the skull theres this little gem stone looking thing! Anyone else seen one before? Some people collect them apparently. Nick hocking was the one who said this i think.
I have heard that the same ones from the swan head out to sea, read somewhere that they tagged one in the swan and it was caught out the back of rotto around the barges.
Hey spess they do have "jewels" as we call them. They are the otoliths though. You dry them out and pull the head apart to get to them or just start cutting through. They can be tough to find but they are a trophy of the mulla's you catch after you have eaten them all. The bigger the mulla the bigger the jewel's.
I'd assume that all fish have them because that is what they were using to check the age of the dhuies in andy's dissection video.

Jewels = Jew fish, hence part of their name. (well, up north anyway)
I have been helping a research scientist pull otoliths out of red emperor, spangled emperor and spanish mackerel all week, FUN FUN FUN. :) But needs to be done so we have more information on the species.
