In SA we get a similar crab

In SA we get a similar crab in the shallows on some (calm) beaches except its a light grey in colour - Not sure what they are called.

All good, Glenn at the Museum has solved the mystery

 

It's one of the pebble crabs, Myra mammillaris, family Leucosiidae. It's an Australian endemic found on all coasts and quite common up in Dampier according to our Woodside records. Lives in fine sediments in shallow waters to around 20 m.
