When we decided to target them we usually get one or two. We have had alot more luck with them this year. We were actually very well placed last night hoping for a early season barra, salmon or mullaway.
Live bait everywhere and we were very well stocked with mullet. That one hit a livey about 5 inches long on 8/0 running sinker.

Im pleased to cross this fish off my list they can be very elusive down south. We have had good luck with these this year but my aim this year is to cross that bloody BARRA HOODOOO of my list.
I dont mind when fish like this decide to hammer my bait though. Good fun and they go like road trains in the creeks.

Give the Yule and Turner a bash for Barra this season spooled, put in the hours and you'll be successfull.

I'm the opposite, landed plenty of barra but still yet to land myself one of those horse jews. Couple of nights on the balla rock bar are on the cards this year I think.

Balla

Fri, 2006-09-22 11:57

Give us a buzz Jay when you want to go down to Balla. I will be there with bells on. The mullas come through in big schools off that rock bar. I have seen alot caught from there.

Just a message to all in the north that fisheries are inspecting people without throw net licences, i think they are about $25 but well worth it with the barra season upon us. Mate got hit with $100 fine the other day.

Skyview

Fri, 2006-09-22 16:03

Mitch have a squizza at this site. Skyview gives you satelite images that i think were taken a few years back but shows in detail the caostline between Karratha and De Grey just north of Hedland. If you have any problem operating it, give me a buzz. the one you want is under special projects i think

Good fish

Fri, 2006-09-22 17:08

Spooled that's a cracking black jew for a creek. What depth of water were you fishing in the creek. When I lived in Kununurra all the creek jews I encountered came from deep holes on the junctions.

black jew.

Fri, 2006-09-22 19:33

You got it they are black Jews and they generally keep to the deep trewnches within the creeks. This one wasn't in such a deep hole we played around in 10m to 5m walls and this one was in the 4's. A they go like the clappers.
Alot of people tackle them on heavy pounded handlines.
It's more fun on the lighter gear.

Black Jew

Fri, 2006-09-22 18:07

Hi Mate,
I lived in Weipa, FNQ for a few years and we used to target Black Jew which grew to XOS sizes. Is this the same species? It was bare knuckle, bash down fights, tight in structure that I remember in Weipa, with 65lb being our best.

"theres some nice looking creeks around the balla balla area"
Yeah balla balla is a nice system and so are the creeks around it, but then again, so are all the pilbara creeks eh.

Spooled, what's this skyview website address? I've heard people talk about it before.

Spooled have you ever had a problem trying to open new mosaics/images with skyview? Whenever I try to open a new sat image it keeps displaying the one I was previously looking at. The only way I can get it to open a new image is to resart my computer?
