Sunday's fishing

Sunday's fishing

We managed to get over the line on Sunday despite a windier than predicted forecast, crap tide and fishing shallower ground than I normally do.

We met "Lamby" Liam and his crazy skipper Tim who only knows how to drive a boat at one speed[full throttle] at Ocean Reef at 6.30 and fished some marks west of Mindarie. Morning proved to be a bit testing with nothing really of any significance caught. We decided to make a trip to some ground that we found about 4 months ago and never really fished. First drift, a very nice Nanny, Second drift, 9.5 kg Dhufish, Third drift, 6kg Dhufish, that was on our boat and the other boys were kept busy as well as far as I could see, but I don't know exactly what they caught on baits or jigs. We were 1 fish short of our limit, so we decided to persevere and try to find some different ground to no avail. The very short bite had shut down. The other boys landed a nice Harlequin to round off their limit, and they pulled stumps and headed for the marina at full throttle again, because we left very shortly after and had no chance of catching them up!!

It was good to meet you boys, and we will definately do it again. Feel free to add, Liam as I'm not much of a story teller.

Steve.

Was a great day out on the water thanks Steve. We greatly appreciated the marks you put us on and managed to land a dhu, snapper and blackarse at the first mark then picked up the harlequin on the way back in. I have taken a few shots but havent had a chance to put them up yet.

Driving at speed is a specialty of mine. Have had a few 'compliments' from battered passengers before.

Nannies

Mon, 2010-08-16 19:21

Daz, My best nannies have come from surprisingly shallow water. This one I got in 37mts and I have caught some other good ones in 40 odd mts, but I don't get them all the time. We generally always get them in 60 plus though but not as big, go figure??

Red snapper

I think you are right Ron, after looking at the book they are more than likely Red Snapper rather than Nannygai. Both good on the fang though!!

Steve you summed that up perfectly, was a good day out mate cheers! It was bait for us with that drift, jigs were too much hard work. Lol @ Two speed Timbo (obeying speed limit or flat the f... out) Managed to catch the christmas crackers on the bench esky as we came over some chop, took a bit of wind out of me.

Good work Steve. I say it

Tue, 2010-08-17 08:10

Good work Steve. I say it was a nanny by the white strip of scales going down its body. Could be wrong, maybe canarvonite can tell us the difference between red snaps and nannys.

I think its supposed to be eye colour (white v's yellow), and the number of spines in the dorsal.
