A few tasty fillets there Adam. Do you ever see any painted crays around the areas where you spear?

Painteds

Tue, 2007-12-11 16:14

Yeh, we saw 4 painteds today and 1 green. They were all deep in the crevices and too hard to get by hand (didn't have loop) so went home empty handed on that front. What was strange thou was seeing 5 barramundi cod and a heap of clown fish which I've never seen up here before.

Loops

Tue, 2007-12-11 16:18

Are the loops effective on these tropical crays Adam? Just thinking ahead for my coming move north.

I believe so

Tue, 2007-12-11 16:25

I believe so, but haven't tried as the spear gun is always the first choice. Now that I know the area we are in has quite a few around I will be taking one with me to determine their effectiveness. From what we saw today I would think that they would be.

Are you allowed to spear crays over there adam, not quite as much skill as using a loop like I used to in perth.  How good do the barramundi cod look underwater.

Fisheries WA

Tue, 2007-12-11 17:03

Spearing not allowed for crays if I'm reading the Fisheries WA website correctly.

Quote:

Divers may only catch lobster by hand, or by using a hand-held snare or blunt crook.

Spears and similar devices that puncture or damage rock lobster are illegal.

The bit I particularly like is the fact that there's no closed season for them north of 21' 44" south.

I couldnt believe it when they told me over here we were allowed to spear them. Only freediving no scuba. most of the time we dive under 3m anyway.

hey adam, anothe way of getting the crays mate is to Get a string mop and rip out half the string to thin it up a little and chop the handle in half.  When you see a cray put the mop in the crevice and twist it a little, the crays get stuck in the string bit of the mop. Never done it but i have hear good reports.
