I know you were in Exmouth, but what is that fish and where was that photo taken? I didn't know about even half of the places it looks like you fished up there!
Hey Adam the fish is a wolf herring....slimy sucker which is pretty much good for nothing....we picked them up whilst trolling for Mackies in shallow water. Once I scan these pictures, I will post up some more critters...like lizard fish and boxtail catfish...
The place the pictures where taken hasnt really got a name...we called it Kaos Alley but it was on the west side of Simpson Island...
How many islands are in the gulf? I thought there were 3 and didn't even know there were any tributaries.. Just thought there were shoals and shallow waters.. Shows how much I know! My old man used to be a professional fisho in Exmouth in the 70's, didn't tell me enough about the gulf, said the back of Ningaloo and the Murions were the place to be.. But i spose a lot of things have changed since then and catching 30kg mackeral on bare hooks with t-shirt as the lure is a thing of the past!
Those wolf herring are actually very popular over here as troll baits for big spaniards (I've got a couple rigged up in the freezer at the moment). I'll see if I can dig up a photo
Wolf herring, sliced right to avoid the bones is really yummy sashimi. We use to catch them not with a hook, but with a bicycle spoke. Take one bike spoke and attach to a wooden base , so the spoke is standing, sharpen the exposed end, then push the spoke thru a piece of styro. Take one dead bait and spike it on the the bike spoke. turn the whole thing over so that it is floating spoke down.
The wolf herring will strike from directly below, so hard and fast, that they will spear themselves. Works well if you are targeting them in an area where they hang out.
Sorry no pics! Use to do this in Singapore when I was a kid. Learned it from my dad. It is a technique that is still used today by the Malay fishermen.
Andy, I am keen to have an opportunity to have a fish with you at some point in time!

Use to catch them this way up to a meter long!

Wow, that's interesting
Have you got any pics of this sort of fishing technique alfred? I've never caught a wolf herring before.
Where abouts do you fish for them?
Cheers
