I think they may have been too small to survive anyway as was reading they are usually born between Oct to Dec.

Are sharks the only 'fish' to have live birth? Not including dolphins and whales. I never knew that, only went to school to eat my lunch

Not 100%

Mon, 2013-07-08 19:53

Hey Tim-O, I'm not 100% but I think it is mainly the the "primitive" fish like sharks & rays that generally bear live young. Some others are "mouth breeders" that either lay eggs and incubate them in the mouth (even past hatching) or bear very small live young and keep them safe in their mouths. Some freshwater aquarium fish also are also live bearers, like guppies, mollies, platies etc. Overall though I think that majority are egg layers, including some species of sharks.

...did any of the above make sense?

Yep, I am fully aware of the aquarium species, just curious about the ones we may encounter fishing, so if we get a fatty, and know of this then best off releasing mumsy I suppose, like we do crabs

There a range of live bearing

There a range of live bearing fish tim-o, but the majority of them are very small and are primarily found in freshwater such as Gambusia. Plenty of them in the aquarium trade

Yeah I've been shark midwife a couple of times now. It's amazing how small the sharks were that actually gave birth too.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Ready to go?

I imagine most aren't quite ready to face the big wild yet and wouldn't survive long anyway.

Live and dead

Tue, 2013-07-09 15:45

When shark fishing up north, if they were alive and kicking they were next years catch, if dead tomorrows bait.

Have had some tigers and hammer pups that were alive and around a metre in length and also on the other side of things, from small tigers a metre long with pups about 150mm long
