snappermiles do you think the warmer water has anything to do with the amount of sharks around(the smaller sharks)??

I'm aware that they are always there but sounds very unusaul for this far south.

I think they are spinners

I dont think blacktips usually go that far south. They are more off a tropical species. But with the warm water anything is possible, And I am waiting to be corrected.

Pointy snout and no black on

Pointy snout and no black on the pelvic fins so spinner according to the guide.

Very nice captures. Havent seen or caught any sharks while fishing metro (but caught a fair few whiting). Would be a welcome sight while fishing for some whiting. Did you change your rigs around so the caught whiting wouldnt simply get bitten off by the sharks on the way up?

Long nosed greys

Thu, 2012-01-19 13:23

They are long nosed grey sharks, often confused with black tips

Good eating if they are cleaned straight after capture not left in the icebox until you get home.

Seems to be another name for the same species (Carcharhinus brevipinna). Like most things, has a few common names.

Whats your cleaning method for them carnarvonite?

Same

Same as for any shark, while they are still kicking. As soon as you bring them on board, give them a whack if you're not sure of what you are doing, cut across the back of the head to kill it, off with the tail, cut from the base of the pecs up alongside the gill cavity in to the back of the head, both sides.  Open it up from its vent up the belly to where you have cut from the pecs . Bend the head down and pull it towards its tail bringing all the innards with it. Remove the brown strip inside the gut cavity  and wash making sure the hole from the cavity down by the centre of the spine.

All this should take something like 2-3 minutes if you know what you are doing, so you are not going to miss much fishing time and waste some good eating by leaving it for later.

The spot where I get my whiting the sharks

Fri, 2012-01-20 06:59

Are there every year, after I lost three rigs and had about ten whiting on board I gave up o the whiting and had some fun with the sharks! I don't think there are any more than usual! But I did say that about the north west blowies but I have since changed my mind after the last trip out! I had them feeding on the surface in thirty meters
