what is this little tacker??

caught this little fella on the sand whilst fishing for whiting! i looks similar to a gurnard but does anybody know its actual name?

depends what you mean by 'larger brothers'?
The spines on these are supposed to have a bit of poison, but pretty mild.
They are excellent eating, but perhaps not at that size :-)

the red gurnard
you catch out on the reefy areas out of perth! cant remember there name! but they are great eating! i just use welding gloves to fillet them!

Ah, OK. correct name for those is Western Red Scorpioncod. They are in a different group - actually scorpionfish - and they are venomous!

yes very venomous
my old boy got done years back!! he downed twelve beers some nurofen and just sat down for a few hours his arm swelled up and his glands! he said it was the worst pain he has had! but from what he has heard he got off lightly compared to some others!

that sounds awful! Hot water is the first aid. As hot as you can stand, for as long as you can stand it. It breaks down the proteins in the poison. If you don't have a flask of hot water use the water from the outboard telltale. Otherwise beer and nurofen

it's a red gurnard
Red Gurnard - Chelidenichthys kumu
Red Gurnard have a tapered sandy coloured body with irregular red vertical bands and highly patterned pectoral fins which have a green base colour with bright blue spots and a bright blue top edge margin. There is a large black spot with scattered paler spots. The pectoral fins are large and more elongated than round. The first three rays of the pectoral fin are free and act as fingers for detection of food.
Red Gurnard grow to 2kgs and 60cms.
They are well regarded table fish.
Red Gurnard are found from Shark Bay Western Australia, south around southern waters then north to southern Great Barrier Reef Queensland, including Tasmania.
