What is the best out there, should be a few brand names.
Not caring what it costs.Working on 20-30LB line
Not interested in what's the best value for money, just the thinnest and strength

braid
you definately cant beat fireline for the strongest, but its not as thin as some of the others.
suffix matrix pro is pretty strong and has small diameter, plus you can get 500m spools.

Thinnest, strength and
Thinnest, strength and smoothest you want to go for varivas, sunline, or YGK ultra (jigman or castman). Unfortunately few are available in 20-30lb. YGK ultra is, but you'd need to order it in from overseas.
If you dont need ultra thin, theres more options available. By ultra thin, I mean PE2 being 30lb or so. Daiwa do some good lines for this. E.g. accudepth or SW sensor for jigging braid. For casting, in medium range, saltiga surf (this stuff is ridiculously smooth). In the light range, TD sensor. Bass hard is another good one for light line. So is sunline cast away. One of the few I havent used, but seems really smooth and is what i'll be getting next.
YGK powerhunter is available in the lower sizes (PE 2, 2.5, 3) but its not quite as smooth as the other braids. Has been a good line apart from that (though i do prefer lines to be a little smoother).
Matrix pro is alright (some dont like it). Despite what it says on the packet, its not all that round though. It is a good value line, and is very thin for its rating (similar to the japanese ratings of say PE2 for 30lb).
I dont like fireline, nitlon or platypus pro.
So what purpose are you using it for?

On a spinning reel straight
On a spinning reel straight down 100 feet snapper to mulloway and sometimes the odd 5-8 foot shark takes the bait instead.

using the yamatoyo super PE, 20lb for my certate hyper custom 3000.. casting 10g lure without problem. agree.. like them the moment i had my fingers on them.
sunline castaway and the PE green are both sweet. but sunline has this 'rock fish PE' which is orange in color.. one word unbelievable. soft n smooth.
never and do not waste your $$ and time on fireline.......(IMO) its as if casting wires....

Yeah I agree fire line is too stiff and seems to fray after a while. The one I always use is Tufline XP. Ive tryed a few others and was very disapointed but Tufline has never let me down. I wont use anything else.

Jigman
Gotta disagree on the Jigman.
Running some original X8 on my stella (PE8) and some PE5 on an 8000 Twinpower. Line is a bit stiff compared to other braids but ties a decent knot and I have given them both a thrashing, particularly in the past 12 months.
Mind you, I didn't pay AU prices for it.
Also have some ultra jigman on a spinning reel and that's a beautiful braid.
Also spinning with PE2 Bass Hard and thats not a bad line either.

tuffline XP for value for
tuffline XP for value for money if very hard to beat. I use the 15lb stuff on all my 2500-3000 size reels and it has never let me down, very thin and seems to knot well. Got the 50lb on my 10000 stella spare spool and we used it on a few small black marlin and sails and no compalints. Also run it on a satliga 40 overhead and again no problems. I just bought a 1000yard spool of 50lb and use it for everything.

What about frog
Haven't tried it but saw some in the local. Rude expensive and wondering if the "you get what you pay for" rule applies to this stuff.

Yeh it does apply to the
Yeh it does apply to the Frog braid. Like you said "you get what you pay for" I got Varivas PE lines costing me over $250 per 600m and it is top self stuff but value for money is a different story. Reason why I pay so much....PE4 = 64lb, PE8 = 120lb. Its also 8ply with a special coating to give it that silky smooth finish, thus giving you a smoother, further cast.

The original question was in regards to the best braid PE rating compared to line strength... not value for money.
Varivas SMP all the way, no doubt in that.

Is it badly out dated or something..???

Probably because
Probably because spiderwire isnt the best braid you can get when cost isnt an issue :p Bit 'old tech' I guess, but they do have some braids now, but when you're looking for premium thin line, theres better stuff out there.
Overall best line, go Varivas as recommended. If you dont mind your line being PE3/30lb theres lots of options you could walk into a tackle store and pick up today. You should get 300m on the Van Staal if thats what you're putting it on, so line capacity wont be a problem.

Suprised nobody has
Suprised nobody has mentioned Berkley Whiplash, if you can find a thinner braid than whiplash your doing well I reckon, the 30lb is thinner than anything in comparison. And I spent a long time chopping and changing and looking always coming back to the same stuff, it has been near on impossible to find something comparable in diametre.
$$ has never been a problem for me either, so if there is something out there that is comparable then point me in the direction and i'll give it a crack.
cheers

What diameter measurements
What diameter measurements are you going by though? And have you compared it to any PE2 line (which would be 30lb in a decent brand).
Also whiplash isnt available in colour-metered.

Whiplash is ok, but i've
Whiplash is ok, but i've found it to break under or at the breaking strength that it says on the pack. Sometimes a fair way under depending on the batch. Most other brands of braid will say on the pack 30lb for example, and will break a fair way over that (usually least 35 or 40lb). This is why it seems so thin compared to other braids in the same price range. It's also a little rough. But still, it's good value for the price you pay, you may just need to get a slightly heavier breaking strain then you would of a better quality line.

Berkley Whiplash!
I agree Richo, i've used most of the brands on the market today from cheap to expensive and Berkley Whiplash is my favourite by FAR!
Very thin diameter, proven history with me, strong, reliable and most all of my outfits which are many have Whippy on it!
I stock it in 300m spools and Bulk spools @ my shop also!
As for PE, Sunline PE Green is one of my favs but I dont get tied up in PE too much, just my second pref and a good valued PE too!

I've tried a huge range of
I've tried a huge range of lines over many years. Used fire line, whiplash, YGK power hunter, YGK ultra jig man, YGK ultra cast man, FINS, Power Pro, Tufline XP, Varivas Avani GT, Daiwa Sensor, Yamatoyo, Hercules, Geoff Wilson, Platypus Super Braid, Sunline PE, Varivas Big one & Varivas PE tuna.
Prefer, Varivas Avani GT for popping, Varivas Big One for jigging... but also like FINS, Tufline, Power Pro & YGK at the other end of the cost spectrum.
Probably the least performed in many years of sportfishing has been hercules (poor), whiplash & yamatoyo. Perhaps some bad batches... or pushing the limit too far.
I like using fireline up to 6lb for light work.

New Formula!
Yeh, many years ago the old Whiplash had a bad batch but since then the Berkley Whiplash "New Formula" was released and has been a winner for me & many of my customers!
I've pushed it hard up north on GT's etc and also landed hard fighting sharks to 120kg (240lb) around reef as bycatch on 80lb Whiplash New Formula!

Go Pink
I can't go past the Bionic for beach and rock fishing. It never tangles, it can handle abrasion better than any other braid I have tried and it is very strong.

what lb are you using colin?
what lb are you using colin? i'm running 30lb on one of my beach/rock combos, and i though the diameter was quite thick, but i decided i would give it a try, but have recently had some huge wind knots/birds nests which has made me seriously reconsider it...
