Anyone find anything interesting for 2009?

List your Dangerous fish in WA

Hi Crew,

Quan just sent me a PM with a great idea for a forum thread, so I thought I'd put it up and see where it went. The idea is to post up any pictures or info you have on fish in Western Australia, even Australia for that matter which could be considered as dangerous, painful or something to note when handling/filleting a certain fish.

One example is Coral Trout, the top dorsal spines carry a toxin that infects the area under the skin and causes it to puss up and be rather uncomfortable for a few days.  (the other spikes may have it as well, but I've only experienced the top dorsal spike) Generally when you spike yourself its on the fingers or under the finger nails and can cause a lot of discomfort when fishing a few days in a row and something touches it. (Much more painful than your typical niks and cuts)

Cheers,

Adam

Abu Soron Spin Reel

Has anyone seen one of these reels or heard any reports?
I have just been having a look at the technical specifications and they look pretty good, including:
"• 11 HPCR Bearings (with Instant Anti-Reverse) for Corrosion Resistance
• Sealed Carbon Matrix™ Drag System for Ultra Smooth Drag"

I am interested to hear if they are as good as some of the Berkley people are saying and what sort of price range they come in.

All the best, Colin Hay

Sufix MATRIX PRO (penn pursuit braid)

Now in stock at the tackle shack is the range of Sufix MATRIX PRO multi color braid in 250m spools from sizes 20lb to 80lb.

This is the same stuff as the penn pursuit braid that alot of the guys use like PaulG etc and he swears by it, very thin diameter and super strong.

help with snapper in the Sound

Looking to try in the sound next week as the swells are up and looking for a bit of shelter. Will be launching from woodies and looking for help on where and how to catch a snapper. Only fished the sound a couple of times before without any joy.
When people talk about burlying up are we talking about cubing mulies or pollard like for herring?
Any tips on where to drop the pick , out in the middle of the sound or closer to the island or closer to the ramp.
Any help would be great.
Paul

Craypot Weights?

Hi everyone, I just purchased 2 Plastic Craypots today getting ready early for this season I'm glad I did I was'nt aware of all the work involved, puting 3 metal escape plates in each pot plus puting bait holders together and install them. What I want to know is what do you guys use for weights and where do you secure them in your pots. I'm looking for cheap methods as I dont want to buy lead weights as I believe there expensive, what are you guys using?

Cheers Kev

Call for Coral Sea Fishing Ban

Courtesy of the ABC

A group of leading marine scientists is calling for the Federal Government to ban fishing in a 1 million square kilometre area of the Coral Sea.

The scientists say the Coral Sea is one of the few remaining pristine marine areas on the planet and the only way to keep it that way is to ban fishing altogether.

The proposal would create the world's largest heritage park.

Professor Terry Hughes from James Cook University says the protected area would be three times the size of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

"It's virtually unique in that it's one of the last places in the world where you can still find significant populations of big things like billfish and tuna and sharks," he said.

"In most other places around the world those species have been severely depleted.

"So there's an opportunity for the Australiain Government to create something unique and to look after the Coral Sea for the future."

But Robin Hansen from the Queensland Seafood Industry Association says the level of fishing in the Coral Sea is already sustainable.

"I wish that they would consult with fisheries more closely because clearly a lot of the info they are giving out to the public has no relevance at all," he said.

"It is really nonsense to suggest that the area is under threat from fishing practice in this state.

"And the evidence that we have seen with the GBR Marine Park is that there is a cost to commercial fisherman and indeed seafood consumers as to how this impacts in commercial fishing businesses."

Mr Hansen says the scientists are poorly informed.

Imogen Zethoven from the Pew Environment Group says the benefits to the environment far outweigh the hardship that would be experienced by the fishing industry.

"It would impact on a small number of operators who would need some assistance from the Federal Government but on the other side of the ledger the protection of the area would be a huge contribution to global marine conservation," she said.

Catfish jugglin'

My daughter rang from New York on Sunday to wish me a happy Fathers Day. She had spent the previous week in Illinois with her partner who took her to meet some old friends somewhere in the sticks - and she meant Banjo twanging sticks. The friends father took them Catfish Jugglin' - ie you wade around, find a catfish nest on the river bottom and stir it up until the male catfish swallows your arm, allowing you to drag it out of the water for later consumption. This was the highlight of her trip other than watching them shoot raccoons. When she comes home in a year or two she wants to live in Wiluna as she says it will run this place a close second.

any reports from hillarys lately?

havent been down for a while ...

Broome Advice please

Hey guys flying up to broome at the start of october to visit some family friends and hopefully nail a few fish, hopefully an early season barra.

Would anyone like to help us out with what to take and where to go (no secret spots, just rough idea). Would like to hopefully nail a barra, but am very happy to chase queenies and trevors, so all help appreciated.

I think we will hire a 4by, but the people we know have got a cruiser so off road spots- no problem.

Cheers guys

Any action at Cott Groyne

Tuna

Must be getting closer to that time of year again - has anybody seen any and please feel free to PM me where if you are feeling very generous. I was out back of Rotto last wednesday and water temp was up over 20 so fingers crossed. Itching to hear some threadlines singing again! I know there are a fair few of you who head wide chasing bottomies so any tuna schools you see I would love to know even if you are not interested yourselves. Thanks in advance??
