absolute fishing charters
Submitted by fishing fanatic on Wed, 2010-01-13 12:34yesterday me and mate went out with absolute fishing charters. awesome charter id recomend it to anyone who wants to go for some fishing. they only have 6 ppl fishing at a time so u get less tangles and more room to fish and mike and kelly are both very friendly and its one of the best charters i have been on. although there wernt to many fishing biting apart from lots of parrtos and a few dhuies it was still very well set up and they know what they are doing. thanks you 2 for the fishing. it was really good and cant wait to go out with u again

barbed or barbless
Submitted by Ashenfall on Wed, 2010-01-13 00:54after a few encounters with my hooks getting stuck right into various fabrics, and having to cut a piece off my rag to remove said hooks, i'm tempted to crush the barbs on all my hooks to save me the hassle (and also making general unhooking easier). however i'm not too sure of the implications this would have on keeping fish on the hook.
what's everyone's experience with barbless hooks? is the convenience worth the possible lost fish? (if it happens at all?), or keep the barbs on to maximise the chances of landing a catch? i've read several articles claiming that the chances of landing fish are unaffected by the presence of barbs but i can't confirm this easily

seal and angler battle it out
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2010-01-13 00:12By Mail Foreign Service January 8,2010
Surging out of the water, this seal makes a bold attempt to make off with an angler's prized catch. The dramatic tug of war between man and seal took place near the town of Mossel Bay in Western Cape, South Africa.
At stake was a kob, also known as a kabeljou or daga, which is found in large numbers off the country's coast.
Wow, this fish weighs a ton: The well-built angler suddenly realises a seal is trying to make off with his catch
Tug of war: The other anglers become aware of the struggle and either stare in amazement or come to their companion's aid
The anglers were showing off their catch, with one of them draped his fish over the side of the boat, when the Cape Fur Seal made its move.
The fisherman was surprised but after a short tug of war to retain his catch the seal was left fishless.
That's mine: The cob fish is dragged further into the boat pulling the seal with it just before it gives up, lets go and falls back into the sea

Bony herring?
Submitted by lunker on Tue, 2010-01-12 12:48Hi guys, long time viewer here, however I thought it's about time I stopped being lame and started posting!
I have a question... first of all, I fish predominantly in the upper reaches of the river, eg. maylands through middle swan or thereabouts. This year I am yet to see bugger all bony herring activity... have I been in the wrong place at the wrong time or have you guys noticed that there haven't been many? I've been dusting off the mulloway gear now that its hotter but I'd be more confident if I saw some splashing going on (and i'm sick of unfresh bait..)
Has anyone had luck on mulloway or large bream in the upper parts lately? You don't have to give spots away either!
Cheers guys
Chris

Mystery of Irukandji jellyfish sting
Submitted by bod on Tue, 2010-01-12 11:43Angus Hohenboken,The Australian,January 12, 2010
MYSTERY surrounds the case of a Filipino who was stung by a jellyfish on the deck of a coal ship about 25m above sea level in North Queensland.
The 45-year-old crewman was rescued from the bulk coal carrier Konmax after being stung by an irukandji jellyfish while fishing off the edge of the vessel on Sunday. There was speculation the irukandji, which measure about 1cm in diameter, had been swept on to the deck by seaspray.
Air crewman Geoff Abrahams, who helped the rescue in an RACQ rescue helicopter, said the incident had been "fascinating".
"Realistically, what are the chances of being stung by a jellyfish when you are safely on board a bulk carrier 25 metres above the water" he said. "It's really incredible."
Intensive care flight paramedic Brad Watson said although conditions had been windy and a little bit rough he doubted sea spray would have reached the ship's deck. "It's a massive ship," Mr Watson said. "What we believe is that whilst he was fishing and reeling in his handline the stinger has come up on the line or something like that."
Initial reports to the paramedics were that the man was suffering a shortness of breath. When they landed they found him in agony, but there were no marks on him. "He was in extreme pain, highly agitated, sweating profusely, with pain all over his body, nauseous and vomiting," Mr Watson said.
After ruling out cardiac arrest the paramedics were stumped by his condition until the captain of the boat remarked, "how does a man get pain like this when he goes fishing?" Mr Watson, a former pearl diver, had seen a similar reaction when a fisherman was stung by an irukandji in Broome. He treated the man with magnesium, which relieved his pain instantaneously.
The man was flown to Mackay Base Hospital, where tests confirmed he had been stung by the jellyfish. He remains in hospital in a stable condition.
When properly treated, a single irukandji sting is normally not fatal, but two people in Australia are believed to have died from irukandji stings in 2002.

Underwater Cams
Submitted by Fisherman on Tue, 2010-01-12 08:40Thought I would start a topic on underwater cameras. I did a search but didnt find anything relevant. If you know of one, post the link to it so we can all see.
Here is one for all you lads down south to drool over when your stuck at work. This is located at the Exmouth Navy Peir.
A point to note because of the tides here, some days it will be difficult to see, other days its pretty good.

Fishwrecked Family
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2010-01-11 20:10Hi all
I joined this forum because you can never know enough about this pastime/sport and it appeared like a good one.
Then after some time I realized that it is more like a large family sharing hints and tips. And now I know it is a large family that will look after a mate in trouble and inconvenience.
I had some car trouble and had to leave my Boat in Exxy, just prior to a holiday in Bali. Very difficult to organise driving back from Kcity to Exxy in the time frame, where to leave the fish palace and how the hell do I organize this in the time frame.
Fishwrecked is how!
So many people out there to help and assist and it just takes a pm or call, or even a post and the normal humanity we all have comes out.
I think I have the boat all organised and thank you Adam for all your help.
It makes me proud to be a member to just know there is help about.
If anyone is in Kcity ever post me if in trouble and I will help to the best of my ability. But fishing sux up here so better leave it to the locals!!!!!!! LOL.
Cheers

Marron/Trout/Redfin in the southwest
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Mon, 2010-01-11 12:45Gday Guys, Im heading down to Margaret River on Friday night, going to see John Butler Trio at Leeuwin Estate on the sat evening. We are also taking a 4 day weekend for Australia Day and will be camping in the southwest.
Can anyone recommend somewhere to stop for a marron/fish on the way back from Margs this weekend. Also can anyone recommend some places to fish/marron/camp in the southwest for the following weekend? I have done some trout fishing with Hardbody lures around Milltown a few years ago and some Marroning around Nannup about 10 years ago. So any advice for locations/fishing techniques would be appreciated.
For Marroning we used to go in the afternoon and leave a handful of chook pellets every 20mts or so on the bank and then would come back after dark with torches/snares, Is this the way to go for marron? Can you snare for them in the day with meat ?
