Fishing Discussion

General Fishing Chat

Hillarys hijinks

I am glad there were no other Fishwrecked members down at Hillarys tonight (or at least I didn't see any). I might not have lived this down.
The fishing was very quiet and I was sort of dozing off a bit looking up at the stars when there was this horrendous screaming noise right below my butt.
I must have jumped about six foot in the air and almost fell into the water.
It turned out to be two cats who were fighting over a mulie which had fallen down between the rocks I was fishing on.
That was the highlight of the night - so you can guess the fishing action was pretty bad.
All the best,
Colin Hay

dive gear

Looking at getting some dive gear if anyone is selling.

need the whole lot.

Swan river.........waiding the shallows!

I have been cruising along the freeway all week for armadale to the city and good the river has been absolutly like glass every day and it would be perfect for targeting flatfish wjile waiding around the banks. Was going to have a late fish today but couldnt be bothered driving back down. I know the weather is shit house tomorrow but if thers a brake in it it would be worth the effort. Very relaxing way of fishing and with tomorrow off iim crossing me fingers for a few hours releif in the weather for some lure tossing.

Sorry but i havent seen a week of flat water there for a while. I might even give brenz 1lb braid a test out.WinkCheers chris.

Exmouth Dolphinfish

Hi All

I have been going to Exmouth now for many years,
fishing land based and by boat but have never had the
pleasure of catching or even seeing a dolphin fish.
Where in exy do you get them? Is there any special way to fish for them?
Any info would be helpful. Thanks

What fish are on the top of your to-catch list?

I havent been fishing too long so havent caught a massive amount of species (and usually not more than one or so of each :p).
My list of fish I'd like to catch goes on for pages, but there are still ones at the top of the list:

1. Dolphinfish - for the aerial acrobatics, light line and great to eat too.

2. King George - never caught one or tasted one.

3. Sailfish - great fighting with aerial shows, tailwalking, and big fish to boot.

(wouldnt mind a dhuie over 3kg, a barra, or pink snapper, any size on some driftbaiting gear, and practically any pelagic).

So what are you guys top 3 fish you'd like to catch and why? Perhaps a species, bigger sizes, on different gear, lures/bait/SPs/jig or different styles/line classes perhaps. It would be interesting to see what fish are at the top of peoples list, especially those guys who've caught every species under the sun.

New boating funding

The link at the bottom will show where the money is being spent.

More than $3.5million infrastructure funding announced for regional WA
Portfolio: Planning and Infrastructure

The State Government today announced more than $3.5million in grants for local governments and regional bodies for aviation, boating and cycling facilities.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said three State Government schemes were designed to assist country communities in building infrastructure for air service, recreational boating and cycling.

Boating enthusiasts in 14 regional centres along the coast of Western Australia, from the South-West corner through to the Kimberley, would benefit from more than $748,000 in funding to improve facilities.

Ms MacTiernan said a State-wide, 10 per cent growth in registered recreational vessels over the past two years was putting strain on existing boating facilities.

“The Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme (RBFS) allows the State Government to meet this increasing demand for new and improved boating infrastructure by reinvesting boat owners’ registration fees,” she said.

“Since 2001, the scheme has distributed almost $6million across 143 projects, to local governments and other agencies which provide boating facilities.”

The Minister announced that she was considering a further mini-round of RBFS funding in the next six months to use surplus funds from the unspent allocation, with a review of the scheme, including the limits of the project size and percentage funded, to be assessed.

A total of 19 regional airport projects would share in more than $2million, courtesy of the latest round of Regional Airports Development Scheme (RADS) grants.

Ms MacTiernan said the funding would improve access to community services, emergency evacuations and essential supplies.

“Better airports also create new economic opportunities in tourism and aviation-related business,” she said.

“The funding is part of the State Government’s commitment to building stronger regional communities by ensuring they receive their share of the infrastructure dollar.”

Since 2001, more than $14.2million of RADS funding has been committed to regional aviation infrastructure projects.

State Government funding totalling $750,000 will help improve cycling facilities in regional WA, with this year’s Country Pathways Grant Scheme (CPGS) bringing

much-needed cyclist and pedestrian shared path facilities to regional areas.

"Shared paths help residents increase their fitness, either through walking or cycling and provide more sustainable transport options within a community,” the Minister said.

"This year, a total of 80 project applications were received for the CPGS, which demonstrates a strong demand for these paths and the success of the program,”

The Minister said.

Since 2001, the Government has allocated a total of more than $25million to regional areas through these three grant schemes.

Guess who is BACK and writing articles again!!!!!

Well it is about bl*&^y time! It appears that Ryan is finally doing something that he is very good at.That's right he is back and writing articles for WESTERN AUSTRALIAN FISHING MAGAZINE! Have just read his latest offering and found it to be a great read as well as giving us something to think about as an alternative avenue for a fishing fix while the Fisheries ban on Cat 1 fish is in place.

MMMMM now let me see fishing deep water for fish that are only meant to inhabit the north!!!!

Yep count me in (RUBY SNAPPER off the coast of Perth yes please!).

Speaking from personal experience if you get the chance to do this take it up as you will have a ripper of a day! Great fun and Ruby Snapper for tea (DELICIOUS!). If you are looking for alternatives to fishing while the ban is on why not give it a go! Go in to Ryan's shop and have a chat with him it is well worth it.

Oh and Ryan it is great to see you back and writing again mate! Been much too long since you have set pen to paper, but when you do it has turned out good!

Cheers OX

Onslow crocodile watch

The ABC is reprting that a 3 to 4 metre saltwater crocodile has been seen in the Ashburton River near Onslow.

The reptile was first spotted by a kayaker on Sunday.

Police have since confirmed the sighting upstream from the Three Mile Weir.

The Department of Environment and Conservation is urging the public to stay out of the river and be cautious around the water's edge.

Pinnaroo Point

Has anyone ever fished there?

1pce into 2pce??????

Hey guys ive done a bit of rod building and got some nice custom rods done by experienced builders but theres one question that has never been answered to me. can a 1pce rod be made into a 2pce rod? I know the action of the rod may change due to guide spacings and where do you actually cut and join it? This i dont know. The only reason is ive got some really nice rods i dont use any more but would love to convert them into two pce versions to leave permantly in the car. The only problem is these rods are quite valuable and i dont want to stuff them so im tossing weather to sell them or convert them....... I wont be doing them myself but please if anyone could seriously answer this please do, cheers spess.

Trinidad DC reels

I have done a bit of a search and I can't find any decent reviews on the Shimano Trinidad DCs. Has anyone tried one and/or has anyone heard any positive or negative reports.
Keen to get one, but I would like to know if they are all they are cracked up to be.
Many thanks, Colin Hay

Just got my first boat

About 2 weeks ago i got my first boat as a 21st birthday present. It is a 4m dinghy with a 10HP motor. So far i havent been able to take it out as the weather has been pretty rough lately, and this weekend doesn't look much better either unfortunately. I'm a keen fisherman as are my 2mates that always come with me, my brother and Jas04. We are looking for a good spot to take the boat out soon as im dying to get it out. We were origionally goin to go out to cockburn sound for some kg whiting and herring etc. but because of the weather we've had to re-asses our ideas. Does anyone know of a good spot to take a dinghy when its quite windy? Im happy fishing in the river but as i've never really spent any time on boats i wouldn't really know where to go except places like narrows and around mosman park.

Braid scissors

Does anyone have a particular brand or type of braid scissors they prefer? I have a cheap pair of Berkley scissors and they are not that flash.
Any input appreciated
Thanks, Colin Hay

Road crazies

I was hanging to get back down to Hillarys for round two with the mysterious sea creature which busted me up the other day, so I decided to head down there this morning before dawn. Dragged myself out of bed and set off at 5 am to try and get a hour in before sunrise and high tide.
As those in Perth know the weather was pretty wild early this morning, so I was taking it pretty easy on the drive down, thankfully.
I was making my way down Beach Rd and coming to a set of lights near a cross intesection when I saw something through the gloom. It was two guys standing in the middle of road, drunk I guess, trying to wave cars down. I swerved around them and felt thankful I wasn't going a bit faster.
Thought it was a bit strange though. What were they doing at 5 am wandering in the middle of the road in the pouring rain.
Arrived at Hillarys and the same thing happened again. This time three guys were sitting on the roundabout road outside the marina.
Was there something big on last night that I missed. I haven't seen this before at that time of the morning and to get two different groups on the same trip was quite weird.
All the best, Colin Hay

Fishing show on Access 31

I was channel flicking last night and found an excellent fishing show on Access 31. It was on about 2000 Saturday evening. The show host was awesome, catching squid on a jig in one hand, pinkies on the other and jig ready to go to catch calamari. Awesome and worth checking out. May have been called Australia Outbound, any one correct this???

Fishing Location

Has anyone ever fished Mullaloo Beach/point??

if so where is the best spot?

2009 exmouth comp

Well with days passing by and next year coming close, maybe now might be the time we actually start looking at working out the exmouth trip that everyone is talking about.

Would be good to get some more idea's on whos going, who needs deckie spots if there is any available, where people want to stay and fish out from, also we can look at sponsorship and prize structure and catagories of what people want to fish for etc.

I for one would love to fish, and hopefully some discussion with certain people might be able to have me fish, but time will tell.

maybe we can get a rough idea of the month people want to fish, then just lock the dates in and who can make it will and who that can't miss out, i know there's no way of making everyone happy but if we can get somewhere in the 10 boat number it would be good anymore would be even better.

Depending on the prizes donated/ sponsors etc, there is 2 options as a small entry fee or just a free entry, something else that can be worked out depending on who we can get and what prizes etc.

Also any other idea's from other members that are looking at going would be great to get this off the ground would be great.

4 Dicks

Oh well bad weather , so great time to stock up on fishing supplies especially when you have a gift voucher left over for christmas and you get a discount on top

fishing records

Well since there has been some good fish put up on here lately i was curious to what members have had any state or maybe even australian record captures?

Years ago i held the AAA state victorian mirror carp record, dont know if its still current, my dad also holds the vic and australian record for red cod which is like a bearded rock cod he has had that since 1988.

So do tell if you have one or was very close to one
