Rock crabs

There are heaps of rock crabs on the Hillary's marina walls and I was contemplating taking a crab spear down there to collect some bait. Is there any restrictions on spearing rock crabs?

THE MOST FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH WORD

THE MOST FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH WORD ....

HOPE THIS MAKES YOU SMILE

THE MOST FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH WORD

Well, it's shit . that's right, shit! Shit may just be the most functional word in the English language.

You can smoke shit, buy shit, sell
shit, lose shit, find shit, forget shit, and tell others to eat shit.

Some people know their shit, while others can't tell the difference between shit and shineola.

There are lucky shits, dumb shits, and crazy shits. There is bull shit, horse shit, and chicken shit.

You can throw shit, sling shit, catch shit, shoot the shit, or duck when the shit hits the fan.

You can give a shit or serve shit on a shingle.

You can find yourself in deep shit or be happier than a pig in shit.

Some days are colder than shit, some days are hotter than shit, and some days are just plain shitty.

Some music sounds like shit, things can look like shit, and there are times when you feel like shit.

You can have too much shit, not enough shit, the right shit, the wrong shit or a lot of weird shit.

You can carry shit, have a mountain of shit, or find yourself up shit creek without a paddle.

Sometimes everything you touch turns to shit and other times you fall in a bucket of shit and come out smelling like a rose.

When you stop to consider all the facts, it's the basic building block of the English language.

And remember, once you know your shit, you don't need to know anything else!!

You could pass this along, if you give a shit; or not do so if you don't give a shit!

Well, Shit, it's time for me to go. Just wanted you to
know that I do give a shit and hope you had a nice day, without a bunch of shit. But, if you happened to catch a load of shit from some shit-head...........

Well, Shit Happens!!!

Okuma Aquios AQ-30

I received one of these reels last night as a giveaway with a subscription to a certain fishing magazine. They look pretty good as a bream/whiting reel or for small lures and soft plastics.
Five ball bearings, pretty smooth. Life time warranty.
Has anyone tried one out?
They don't even appear on the Okuma sites. Only Aquious mentioned on those sites are rods.
Also interested in knowing what they are worth?

All the best, Colin Hay

Low light sunglasses

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the best sunglasses for low light conditions. I have a pair of Maui Jims which are great for cutting out the glare, but when the light gets pretty low you pretty much can't see a thing.
I am looking at recommendations for the best sunnies for spotting fish early in the morning or late in the evening. Not too worried about the cost as I can claim them back from the tax man.
Many thanks,Colin Hay

Fish Id

Caught these while in Karratha in 50meters of water. Not sure if they are good eating.
I put em back anyway.

Anyone know what they are?

Federal fisheries news

Federal Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, has welcomed a negotiated outcome regarding export
approval for one of Australia’s most important Commonwealth-managed fisheries
The negotiated outcome follows an appeal by the Humane Society International to the Administrative
Appeals Tribunal relating to the export approval granted by former Environment Minister Senator Ian
Campbell for the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (SESSF).
“This negotiated outcome means expensive and protracted litigation has been avoided,” Mr Garrett
said.
“I am pleased that my Department, the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and the Humane
Society have negotiated a revised set of environmental conditions relating to the export of a range of
species from this fishery.
“These additional conditions are designed to give greater protection to species such as the eastern
gemfish, Australian sea lions, seabirds and Harrisson’s dogfish.
“The successful resolution of this matter is a win for both the environment and the fishing industry.”
The SESSF is a complex, multi-species fishery that operates from just north of the Queensland border
to Cape Leeuwin in south-west Western Australia. It encompasses almost half of the Australian
Fishing Zone. The fishery operates in both state and Commonwealth waters and is one of the highest
value Commonwealth-managed fisheries, with landings of more than 35,000 tonnes annually and a
gross value of $81 million in 2005-06.

Trolling Skirts in Exmouth

Guys I am off to Exmouth in May and chasing some advice on what skirted lures to buy before heading up.  Advice on teasers would also be great.

Hillary's marina Tuesday

Caught up with Troy (Kaitan) down at Hillary's marina last night. Tried out the area behind Aqwa, but apart from a few smallish bites (felt like skippys) there was not much happening.
We decided to move to the north wall as Kaitan had caught a few decent tailor there recently.
Pretty good conditions, very little wind on that side and the water was clear as.
Kaitan managed to hook up to what we think was a big stingray (it headed east and didn't want to stop) and a small shark (which he got to the rocks but as it was only hooked through a side fin managed to get off before we could pull it onto the rocks. Probably a good thing because we were going to release it anyway).
Not too many other bites, but it was still a good night to be out in the fresh air.
There was a report of a guy catching a pretty big tailor inside the marina near Aqwa, so that could be worth a go if anyone is down that way.
All the best, Colin

Kayak fishing

Following up on Adam's suggestion about kayak fishing last week, I am wondering if anyone out there has any information on what are the most suitable kayaks for fishing and who sells them.

I have seen a few varieties on tv and around some of the shops, but having not had a chance to try one out, I am wondering if the pedal variety are the best.

Looking forward to any input,
All the best, Colin Hay

Malcom Douglas bush tucker style vinegar Herring

Watched an episode of Malcom Douglas and his dog where they were stranded on a low tide up in a bush creek.

When the tide was up he was caught some good fish, then when the tide went out and his boat was left high and dry, he showed how to prepare a feed without fire.

He simply cleaned the fish and skinned it, then marinated the fillets in white vinegar.  The flesh turned white like it was cooked.

I caught some bull herring last week and thought I would give it a try.

Turned out to be a winner.  The flesh was sweet and didn't stink of herring!
