1m+ king george

Bloke at work reckons he caught a 1metre plus King George off rotto,  I called bullshit but he insists he did. Do they exist? I read somewhere they can get 4.5kilos but the record is 2.5kilos. I recon bullshit but am happy to be put in my place. Cheers

gotta say no photo, it didn't happen ! I think anyone who caught a fish of supposedly that size would take a pic. A 60cm fish is a stonker kg think that may be a fishy tale at 1mtr

Have seen one in a freezer in albany around that size. I wouldn't not believe. A piccy always helps. Biggest i have caught was 63 cm.

Not KG

Fri, 2017-03-10 10:46

Though not a Kg, have seen as whiting come up off a demersal longline around a metre in length and a flounder that covered the top of a 44 gallon drum.

Used to go out on shark boats off Bunbury on weekends while still at high school and was amazed at some of the fish that came up that we can only dream about now days.

Would like to see a photo off the big Kg but still think it is quite possible to get them that size

Certainly conceivable

My best came from over 70 metres off Mandurah and was a measured 88cm and as thick as your arm.....called for a dhuie initially as it fought that hard down deep but regretfully it was in the late  1970s when mobile phones weren't even heard of.  Have found the photo of the plus 20kg dhuie caught by a mate that day (weighed) and bottomed out the scales but cannot find the KGW .......remember clearly that it was hooked through the head rather than the mouth and took a whole mulie on a flight of 6/0s

A bloke at my work....

Fri, 2017-03-10 12:14

...regularly told me about 3kg Breaksea Cod and 2kg KG's, until I told him to accurately weigh them before telling me again. Mysteriously, he only catches 1.8kg Breaksea and 1.1kg KGs now. Our club record is 1.450kg and was 57cm long. The National record is 2.3kg, which I imagine has got to be close to their maximum size. I'm trying to get the length of that fish now, but I don't think it would be 1m.

A beast from a while ago

Fri, 2017-03-10 12:48

I caught this beast a few years ago
it was 71cm never did weight but 2kg at least it was well thicker than a coke can in width.

http://fishwrecked.com/forum/thumping-king-George

As discussed with old fellas at a few clubs and tackles shops, back in the day 90cm+ on whole mulies on a gang of 3/0 was regular occurrence Would like to see a photo though.

900mm and only 3.1kg Deffo a tall tale, my best is 54cm 1.25kg, as a fish doubles in length it more than quadruples in weight.

The size he said was 110 to 120cm. He,s a good fisherman which is why I'm asking about it on here.  Cheers

Big difference

Fri, 2017-03-10 13:34

So clearly if he can only estimate to within 10cm (which is a big difference) then he didn't measure it. Refer to my first post. Unfortunately, tape measures and scales have a way of embarrassing fishers estimates. When I see a photo of a 900mm or greater KG, against a tape measure, I'll believe it

National and State Records

Fri, 2017-03-10 14:41

OK, heard back now from both the National Records Officer and the State Records Officer.

Precise details are:

State Record - 1.856kg, length 59cm
National Record - 2.3kg, length 61cm

I have the girths as well, but was asked not to publish them because they have a formula that uses the girth to check for false claims. I will say there is 1.2cm between them.

As I mentioned earlier, Ocean Reef Sea Sports club is 1.450kg and 57cm.

I'll leave it for you to consider these measured and photographed details, and extrapolate that to a 1.1/1.2m fish.

Big Kgs

Fri, 2017-03-10 15:21

I have caught many ripper kgs over the years, with many going well over 50cm. The biggest I have caught went 61cm Measured on a ruler when caught(I have posted it on fishwrecked). I believe they do get bigger, but I am yet to see one in the flesh. Good mates of mine have told me they have caught them off Rotto over 70cm. Good fish indeed!
Would like to see one over a metre...

without a pic its highly doubtfull imo

years ago there was a busso pro , jeff smith ,he was second generation pro , he fished with handlines for big kg out in the bay as well as other stuff , i and my brother often saw him come into the retunda at the old original busso jetty as kids in his 21 foot pro boat "jo rain "which was a big boat back then , with luggs of big kgs, mostly they where in the 45-60 cm size range ,with some bigger beautifull big bastards as thick as your arm + , he also caught alot of big pike, skippy etc ,

that was back in the late 60s and early 70s jeff was a true pro , who knew the bay well

dont see hauls like that nowdays though

Kg

Fri, 2017-03-10 22:39

My uncle was a pro between the capes in the 50s and 60s

with his boat The Reliant. Told me that his deckie caught a

kg straight out from Cowie Bay that was over a yard long.

They both called it for whiskery shark on the way up.

Also surely 61 cm is not the national record as I've caught some

A bit longer than that myself. So I'd say a meter is possible.

Off Two Rocks

Sat, 2017-03-11 04:51

Before GPS was affordable and sounders were B&W we had an overnighter off TR. In about 70m we picked up 2 KG that were almost 1m long. I cant remember exactly the number, over 90 but not 100. We had no idea how big the records were and at the time both of us figured that in the deep water these were the norm. As we planned to be fishing deep, 70m was deep for us, a lot more there was no photo's taken.

I can beleive 1m is possible.

Grey Ghost, here's a pic of a couple of KG caught a few weeks ago.  You probably know that Dhu legal size is 50cm.  The smallest of the two Dhu is 55cm. The KGs were 45cm and 48cm.  Some mates and I have been regularly catching similiar sized KGs.  Maybe we've been really really lucky...

Pic was taken with my phone camera and I don't use photoshop or any imaging software.  With me, what you see is what you get.. No bull!

My brother went out in a mates new boat a few years back straight out from Ocean Reef about 1km. They knew nothing about the area and just dropped down on the first spot they felt like. Came home with 3 of the fattest KGs between 52-56 cm. Lost a couple too. Middle of the day in the middle of summer. I now know its not nearly that easy usually!

My uncle is Hugh Smith. He worked out of Canal Rocks and Busso until the 70's

after that he went north chasing pelagics mainly, Abrolhos and further north.

Was harbourmaster at Dampier at retirement I believe.

He's still around with a sparkle in the eye. Many stories.

Certified scales and state/national records don't lie. Fishing clubs all over the country have been recording records on certified scales and KG are one of the prize fish of all time. Personally my biggest was 54 and 1.4 kg, every centimetre on big KG = big girth. Bring on the pics of the 60cm + fish, anything over 50cm is big.
