These FAD's are being trialed over some shallow water (around 40-50m) and are accessible by most medium sized craft on a nice day.

Will be interesting to see what they hold, I've seen some epic fish near that ground.

Work

Mon, 2015-03-09 22:20

Will be interesting to see if they will work in that location.
There is a wave bouy south of rotto that is out all year round in a similar depth but have never seen fish on it.

I like the idea of using the bottom structure fad's made of concrete etc in that depth. If you can attract the bait fish to the structure you will get the demersals and pelagics too.

Are these planned to be recovered each year or left out?

I am told Recfishwest want to investigate the benefits of shallow water FAD's, hence the trial.

The weighting structure isnt concrete, as far am I'm aware they are made from railway tracks. I believe they are staying out till they go missing as the budget didnt allow for retrieval.

Be interesting to see how they go, and how long they last.

I hope for longevity sake they will get them marked on the charts as navigation hazards!
