2014 Etec blowing fuses...any idea?

 I've got a 130 etec

only a year old, and over easter I noticed my batteries were a little on the low end of charge..so I replaced one with a mates battery which was brand new as it was Easter Sunday and nothing was open

anyway, fished a whole day and was all good then halfway through the next day I lost my smart gauges and my engine wouldn't re start once switched off, but I had plenty of battery charge...deck wash still working as were all my electronics...but once the engine was turned on, the fuse in the top of the engine would blow but I could keep running the motor, but i lost the use of electric tilt

one of my deckies suspected it to be blowing a fuse (which is linked to my starter motor and smart guages, and located on top of the engine under the cowling next to the flywheel) because the engine is trying to pump amps/charge into the battery in the bank that is too low to receive charge..

ive taken to my mechanic and he is a bit stumped for now until he gets a second opinion

my question is...does anyone have an opinion on this issue? Has it happened before to anyone?

i think it's battery related which have now both been changed but am not an overly mechanical person someones like to know what some others may think?

cheers jess

I had twin 115s on my boat.

Thu, 2015-04-23 00:07

I had twin 115s on my boat. Had a similar issue on one. Cost a sh$t load to fix. Then blew the other one up at 280hrs and the other one had a scratch in the bore. I use to run the e tec oil and premium fuel.

The best thing I found for it was a 250 4st yammy! 1900hrs and never missed a beat

i reckon you're lucky you're only blowing fuses! pieces of shit those Etec's i'd never own another one again.

Reece is right, the correct fix is to bolt a yamaha on the back.

I had similar issues on my etec, blew a fuse up at Broome and lost my gauges, turned the engine off to check and would not restart.

Replaced the main fuse and blew it, then replaced again and got home.

After much searching, ended up being the main harness on the boat had worn through on the road trip up from Perth and was earthing out on the ali boat hull (another reason not to own an ali.....haha). Nothing to do with the e-tec, just a dodgy install job by trailcraft.

I would be looking in the main harness, more likely issues there than in the e-tec wiring, but I warn you, it is a bitch of a job!

good advice mate, heaps better than just bagging the engine brand...  it does sound like an earth issue as i had a similar experience from the wiring rubbing during a road trip.

Thu, 2015-04-23 09:04

Oh yeah, I had another issues with blown fuse on my etec......again, nothing to do with the etec itself.....

I had taken off the top cover on the flywheel previously to see if I could pull start it like claimed without a battery (yes was the answer) and when re-installing it, did not put the wiring harness clips back on and the wiring hardness hit the flywheel and chewed through it....man, that gave off some weird and wacky alarms!!!!

had a similar issue

Thu, 2015-04-23 10:33

also have an etec 130 (4 yrs old)

we lost the electric tilt function from the throttle. a few weeks later the gauges started loosing power.

then the motor would not restart.

turned out that the wires coming out of the engine, around the join between the black conduit and the engine cover, were bending when we tilted the motor as far as it could go, and in some cases snapped

the smaller gauge cables for the tilt function were first to go. then the main power cables...

not too hard to fix...

you could have done a similar thing, but the wires might be shorting as well???

might be worth looking into

ETEC issues

Thu, 2015-04-23 11:04

I did a heart transplant last November from a 2000 -130 Honda 4 stroke to a 2014- 200HP Etec. great motor, but I also have had 2 instances when the fuse has blown out at sea. now carry spare 10amp fuses on the boat.
cant see any reason why the fuses blow, but searched on the net a few months ago, and it seems quite common.
still love the ETEC,

So why when working in marine parts was I ordering them just about once a week?

Even funnier was the fact that BRP(Evinrude Etec distributors) outsourced their parts supply to DHL(Thats right the freight mob) so the parts warehouse has no marine experienced staff, just storepeople with no idea evidently.  Spare parts people work in another premises off site. So when I was trying to order an EMM for someone who was trying to go away on holiday I got two BRP Speedo Gauges in a row because apparently they sit on the shelf next to each other and have part numbers nothing like each other.  So I order an EMM under correct P/N a few days later Speedo #1 rocks up via DHL, Call them up - they dispute what was sent because according to their records it was correct.  I take photos of speedo/ p/n / in DHL box with Con note numbers and send them over.  'Oh you have to reorder another unit and we will raise a credit for the incorrect unit' Reorder EMM again with correct P/N a few days later another speedo #2 arrives.  They dispute it again and I go through the process of taking photos and box con note numbers emailing it through for them to say we have to reorder it again and they will raise another credit. So we order another EMM and finally two weeks after the first order is placed they supply the right part.  In the mean time we have been charged for the item three times and the customer missed his holiday with his boat because the people in the warehouse are pelicans.

Worst customer service in marine parts and I have worked with plenty of suppliers.

Yammy 100hp 4 stroke Fire

Thu, 2015-05-21 20:08

As Black Gen says all outbords have different flaws.  I had always been a Yamaha man but the day our 100hp Yammie 4 stroke caught fire 20mile off Carnarvon was one of the scariest times I have had on a boat.  We were very lucky that day we just managed to contain it before the fuel caught fire and we had a fire extinguisher on board!  We were however completly dead in the water.  When we finally made it back to Carnarvon after a 5 hour tow from a mate we went to the local outboard mechanic because we couldnt believe a near new outboard could catch fire. He told us to google it and there would be heaps of hits.  He said he knew of three cases just in Carnarvon where it had happened and that in his dealings, Yamaha refused to take any responsibility for it.  He also said he had one catch fire in his shop whilst he was working on it.   You can read about a very similar incident here:   www.messersmith.name/wordpress/2007/09/07/fire-fire-the-yamaha-f-100-deathtrap/

After this incident I went back to the old syle 90 2 Stroke Yammie and hasn't missed a beat in over 1500 hours.  Like Black Gen says all outboards can have issues.......

I too have been on a boat where the YAMAHA 4 stroke has caught fire...not very funny.

I have an e-tec 130hp and know bugger all about engines/motors, what is an EMM and should I be concerned?

 Engine management module.

Thu, 2015-05-21 20:56

Engine management module. controls everything the motor does.

Being a computer they can and do shit themselves. Expensive to replace if not in warrenty.
