2016 AFL Draft
So now we turn to the draft where the fortunes of a club can be made (The Bont) or broken (Masten).
Gold Coast have picks 4, 6, 8 and 10 which would normally work in West Coast’s favour as they’d be looking to draft by position and not necessarily the best player at that pick but they are chasing quality mids after losing O’Meara and Prestia which is also our area of need with our pick 12.
I have a feeling that West Coast are going to pull a big surprise and draft Powell-Pepper to add some grunt to our midfield and learn under the tutelage of Priddis and Mitchell. It is highly likely that we’ll have to use pick 34 to match a bid on Waterman.
Word is that Freo are chasing Petrevski-Seton and that they are confident he will still be available at pick 7 but if Tim English is available then surely they take him.

I'd be leaning more towards English if I was a Freo selector. Sandilands may only have one or possibly at the very most, two seasons left. Griffiths and Clarke are not offering much, so English fits the bill. Work on him for a year or 2, he has all the tools to become a very good footballer. Petrevski-Seaton will be ok too, but we have enough midfielders getting around.

I think de Boer Mzungu Barlow Mayne and clancee pearce have all been great servants of the club. Disappointed that hannath didnt develop. Morabito is an amazing talent whose body just failed him. He could have been a fyfe, bonta, or dangerfield... smith was also one who was injury prone and deluca and hurley didnt get their chance.
At the end of the day, its time to leave the house.

Its all about cycles and clearly freo are at the bottom of theirs and the eagles are in a position that freo were in in 2013 / 14 and looking to stay in contention (?) For another year or two.
Freo have now got a nucleus of 19 - 25 year olds to take the club forward for the next ten years.

The big knock on PP is his disposal which worries me as we have enough mids who struggle to hit a target as it is. Taranto looks a player as a goal kicking mid which is another area of need for us.
Logue may be a good pickup if still available as he played a fair few games for the Black Ducks league side this season and played a bit of midfield for the Colts and runs a 15+ beep test. Solid unit!

Basically, Swans, GWS, Gold Coast and Brisbane have been given exclusive access to academy players from their States and it works similar to the father son bidding system. If another club bids for an academy player then those clubs have to use their first available pick to match the bid. There is now a points system that I haven't go my head around but it is in place to stop clubs trading away their low picks for top players and then accessing gun academy/father son players for nothing effectively. That along with increased salary caps is just another way of the AFL broom handling the other clubs giving those clubs unbelievable concessions to try and push the game in states that just aren't interested in it.
That being said, the system is now being rolled out so that both West Coast and Freo will have exclusive access to academy players www.perthnow.com.au/sport/west-coast-fremantles-next-generation-club-academy-hub-allocations-revealed/news-story/40c085b063d9ff389f70b985dd2f83e4. Seems that Freo have access to all the soggy biscuit boys in Claremont and East Freo whilst West Coast have Swan Districts which has been one of the richest draft sources for years.

Freo have got a soft 2017
Freo have got a soft 2017 fixture draw thanks to a crap season this year.
No tasmanian travel, no darwin travel, no gold coast travel. 2 games at the mcg, bonus! and other than the eagles only other top eight team we play twice is north melbourne, and i dont think they will really be contenders in 2017.
