20kg+ Mackie
Submitted by sideshow on Sat, 2014-02-15 10:29
Went down to the E shed yesterday arvo looking for a spot and saw a massive spanish mack laying on the deck the bloke who caught it was saying it went over 20 kilo
and it looked about 1.5m. This is the second one in 2 weeks that I have seen and have heard of a few others from there now.

CRAZY!
CRAZY!
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

50 Kilos!! Now that would be a sight. I was lucky enough to work on the Mackeral Islands in the fishing resort and did manage to see a 34 kg monster taken which was an absolute horse. It made the four blokes holding it look like little kids.

Yeah, but nah
Ciguatera poisoning. EXTREMELY rare in WA (2 recorded cases ever), to a point that it's not even worth contemplating as an issue.
They get it a bit in Queensland and NT, and it gets passed on when a fish eats an already infected fish, hence bigger specimens of fish prone to carrying ciguatera.
I've heard you can get cig test kits to test the fish before you eat it. Popular with spearos that nail 15kg + coral trout, etc.

Ciguatera
I lived on on island in the Coral Sea (Willis Island) with unbelievably good fishing and diving off the beach onto reef or the reef drop off...red bass, coral trout, jobbies, many species of trevally and all hungry and has only been fished by a few. Unfortunately also a ciguatera hot spot so none of the trout that were plentiful landed on the table. I had to eat fish out of the freezer.

Yep, but there was no ham radio, all digital during my time. Ham operators would expedition out there and set up stations, happened every few years. Desirable as Willis was it's own country in DX terms I believe. I could understand why you'd get to place like that and hide in a tent talking to someone miles away when an ocean full of hungry (ciguatera laden) fish was literally metres away.

With macks...
...and other predatory pelagics like barracuda/wahoo/dogtooth, it's less a matter of ciguatera and more a matter of mercury poisoning...same reasons, bigger fish consuming greater quantities of contaminated prey, toxic buildup, etc etc.
And like ciguatera, slim to none chance of problems in WA waters...

Are you talking
about the one you are holding up?
If so I question that. Caught heaps of macks off Dampier, largest I got and I thought it was a horse with a pregnant whales girth was 22kg approx (calculated from lenght) AND that was way bigger than the one in the Avatar.
I would gestimate that at 15+kg, maybe 50lb.
Not wanting an arguement but a 50kg mack would be a sight for sore eyes, and take a few blokes to hold up above shoulder height.
EDIT: Oops - typo. The one I estimated was 32kg not 22kg. Much the same as in the photo below.

Now bitten
Have a gander at this one and compare it to the 15kg odd one your holding up.
All off us are fisherman and like to inflate our catches a little, but claiming something that anyone in half the know will see as wrong just irritate me.
I suspect your scale was in lb mate.

I didnt catch it
Was not me that caught it I took the photo, just wish I did catch it. I dont think I would ever beat it or see another this size in my lifetime. My biggest caught pro fishing was a 29kg trunked fish weighed back at the jetty.
The fish in the photo was caught at black rock north of coral bay.
