New Trailer

 Hi all,

After giving the trailer a once over recently i reckon its time to invest in a new trailer.

Have a 6.4m trailcraft sportscab and hoping people might have some advice on good dealers in Perth.

Appreciate any info.

I know people will recommend

I know people will recommend local trailer manufacturers like Ace Trailers.

Whilst pretty good on price, I've seen one of the larger ace trailers a friend of mine recently purchased. It's not as 'robust' as I would have expected given its a new 2013 built trailer.

Don't be afraid to shop over east and ship it over.

Check this mob out.

The I-Beam trailers look pretty good to me plus they use torsion axles which I've just bought from them and upgraded my trailer. Work a treat

Dunbier

Wed, 2014-02-19 09:18

I recently brought a Dunbier Glide Pad for my 6m Quintrex, galvanized axles, springs, hubs and heaps of support for the hull, for a bit over $6000 its great value.

Lots of keel rollers makes the boat roll off the trailer with barely a push and the V section at the back locates the hull in the center every time when retrieving.

My Ace Trailer

Wed, 2014-02-19 12:22

I'm not sure I agree with the comment above about Ace Trailers not being robust.

With Guy at Ace Trailers, you get what you ask for.  I have a 7.5m Aluminium boat circa 3.5T.  For my trailer from him, I ordered 220mm I beam, two 2.7T torsion axles and beefed up hubs and bearings.

If you want it bullet proof, he'll buld it for you.

But, if you want to shop around for the best price, all manufacturers have no option but to downgrade the specs, and you'll get what you pay for

 Yeah Trailit have been round

Yeah Trailit have been round for a long time, but I was a bit suprised when I dropped in there for a quote a few years back.

Outside looked a bit "disorganised" shall we say.

I really didnt like the way they "crimp" the box section at the bend in front of the axle then weld a bit of flat bar across it.

Why you wouldnt build the frames like the old Trailcraft steel Ibeam ones I dont know

good info.

Is it worth getting custom specs? the sportscab is pretty common so assumed most of the off-the-shelf trailers would suit.

Is it much of a price increase to beef up stuff like axlles, etc.?

Not really

My trailer cost around $15k.  I think it cost around $400 to upgrade the I beam from 170mm to 220mm, and around $600 to upgrade the axles, hubs and bearings and tyres. Mine is fully rollered, and I ordered two spare wheel assemblies, including hubs and bearings.  I also got a mesh walkway running almost the full length of the trailer (trust me - this is worth the money).  Other than the tow hitch (which I left at 50mm), the trailer would be rated to 4.5T.  50mm only allows you 3.5T rating.

So it depends what you mean by "much of a price increase".  I thought all the upgrading I did was value for money, but that's a personal thing I guess.

I had a Trailit galvanised trailer before, and after 9 years it basically fell apart with rust......and that was with being religously washed and stored in a garage.  I wouldn't have a galvanised trailer again.

Chives marine

Built me a new one and used all recoverable elements off the old to save on cost and it is a brilliant replacement for a reasonable cost for a 6.8 sea quest @ $4000 roughly

But import beam ally bench type ......mine fitted with Teflon slides as per the original and I cannot fault it and reusing axles, wheels, suspension all of which were perfectly ok as well as led lighting saved heaps

Papas

Wed, 2014-02-19 17:37

Got a new papas trailer before xmas to replace my Dunbier. http://www.papastrailers.com.au/boattrailers.htm

Trailer is so much better and much better built. Cost about 6k as it was the wide version otherwise would have been about $500 cheaper. Was also optioned with the spare wheel and carrier and a few other tweaks for that price that my dunbier didn't come with.

Trailit

Wed, 2014-02-19 18:31

My trailit is 5 years old and I still get ' new boat trailer, eh?'

Nope, Kill Rust spray paint in the colour aluminium for the frame, anodes on the axle. Trailit also made my drawbar longer at no cost ( not worth much really anyway) and balanced the boat on the trailer (moved the axle to the right spot) so there is approx 130kg on the tow ball. I rate them good for the price
