2WD on Ramps
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2015-06-19 13:29
I currently have a 2WD 2.2l deisel 2013 Ford Ranger which is a work vehicle (working on justifying a 4WD next changeover) that I use for my dinghy and will be using once I get my boat which is going to be a 5-5.3 fibreglass hull.
One thing that worries me is ramps like East Fremantle which are very slippery and the extra weight of the boat just resulting in me spinning the tyres on the slippery surface and getting stuck on the ramp. Is this going to be an issue or will the tyre just cut through the slippery stuff and grip the ramp?

2WD on ramp, no worries
Mate, I was pulling a 6.8mtr Frazer, fibreglass with my front wheel drive Kluger. No probs, as long as you don't smash the load pedal when you take off, it will be all good.
recently upgraded to AWD Kluger

would have thought 6.8m
would have thought 6.8m frazer would go over 2T (which is what I thought the tow cap of the kluger was.) Am I wrong?

just a joke
I cant remember using 4WD when launching and retrieving at a semi decent (cement) ramp.
bit under 2 ton boat. I drive a 4x4 but have only used 4x4 at sand ramps etc.

No problem mate. Use to tow
No problem mate. Use to tow my 5.5 glass boat with a ford courier 2wd. Then got a ranger 2wd high rider and towed my 6mtr glass boat with that. no problems at ramps. If there was any sand build and trailer wheels sunk alittle l wouldnt back in as far.
Alittle smoke is always good. Ha

All weight goes on the rear
All weight goes on the rear wheels so no issue with rear 2WD....front wheel drive would be a bit ore exciting!!!!

I've got the front wheel
I've got the front wheel drive kluger and it was fun at the little ramp at south perth where it was covered in 2 inches of sand. But at the normal concrete ramps it works ok.

My Nissan Murano is
My Nissan Murano is "primarily" FWD. Towed my Voyager Ltd and Penguin (both are quite heavy) very well. When retrieving, I would switch on 4WD mode. Never had to struggle at any of the ramps.

Arh the smell of a clutch cooking!
Just about done , just a little bit more slipping!
I hope you guys are all driving autos, cause for the sake of the car and the clutch , we always use low range ( NOT ALWAYS 4WD), at every ramp,
and then 4wd , on sand or sand covered ramps just to be sure , never had a problem.
Your torque increases as the gear ratio lowers , making it just that bit easier.
We have launched using a 2wd in the past , and for 95% of ramps your sweet, although pulling things like 6-7metre cats and bigger glass boats , might
best be left to a decent 4wd.
As a funny one ( being a friday!) we went on a fishing charter on the east coast of tassie many moons ago , and they had a huge glass cat , powered by twin 200
mercs, pulled by------------ a nissan urvan, wtf.,,, haha mad tassies!

Most ramps around Perth there
Most ramps around Perth there are no worries about having a 2wd car. Woodmans/ocean reef/hillaries/ point peron, they all have very good traction.
Get away from Perth a bit ( or even deep water point some days ) and you will wish you have a 4wd. Just asses the ramp and conditions if its slippery stay out a bit and winch up further. I have seen a few 4wds going backwards!
