40 HP - 4 stroke
Submitted by C.P on Tue, 2015-11-10 17:57
My old 2 stroke 40 HP Mercury has died. Got a quote on 40 HP 4 stroke Merc and Suzuki. The Suzuki is $1500 more & I'm not sure that its worth the extra. Going to be painful whatever i choose.
Does any one have a 40 HP Merc?
Any other recomendations?

Yamaha
Go Yamaha if you can, but the Suzuki option would also be ok. Stay away from the Mercury, even though the powerhead is a Yamaha.

The new mercs are getting
The new mercs are getting good reviews. Not sure about the new models using yammy powerheads. I know in the old models they did as l had one and it was a great motor.
I suppose these are the questions you need to ask the dealer.
C.P , shop around and ask for a better deal.

I re powered my 14ft tinny
I re powered my 14ft tinny with a new merc about 12 months ago, had a 40 yammie enduro before that. Noticeably better hole shot with the merc and uses a quarter of the fuel the enduro did, even though the merc is 20kgs heavier
All up no problems so far, very happy with it but time tell more
Edit: the merc is the new 40hp 4 st

Hi GuysFirst postI was never
Hi Guys
First post
I was never a Merc man because of a very bad experience with an old blue band I had years ago. I swore I would never buy one again. But a mate had a real good tinny for sale at a good price with a 2004 40hp merc (two stroke)
That motor has converted me. I used it for 7 years without any problems at all. Being a reasonably big outboard I was worried about pull starting it. But never a problem, first or secon pull every time.
This year in April I decided I wanted to go key start electric tiller 4 stroke and looked at all the brands. Yamaha was top of my list, but I did end up with another 40 merc and have put about 40 hrs on it with not a drama at all. I was a little concerned with "made in China" on the sticker, but was re asured after reading an American fishing gurus article after his inspection of the production plant over there. He said it was imaculately clean, very organised.
So I say go for it.
BTW its only 40 - 60hp that are made in China. everything under 40 are re branded Tohatsu and over 60 are still made in US
Cheers

Good to hear. Nice to have some reassurance when spending this amount of money.
