40m dive today (with sounder pics)

Well what a dive ,makes diving inside the reef look sad.VIDEO TO COME .Have some great sounder pics of overhangs and caves for those who say sounders won't pick them up . We hit the water around 9:00 and headed out to a large lump 13 miles out from Two Rocks ,depth 41m rising to 32m This lump gets plenty of boat fishing it .Conditions were perfect .After setting the anchor and geting ready it was buddy checks and into the water .Meeting us half way was a large school of buff bream mixed with sambos.once on the bottom then the fish turned up you name it we seen it .Around 15 dhuies were around the lump three around 13kg all the way down to small fish off 200mm boldchin, harliquin, sambos, red snapper sweetlip portjackson shark hundreds off fish on a lump that gets flogged to death.Picked up sinkers sitting on the bottom, and rigs hooked to the coral.CRAYS ,CRAYS,CRAYS.and not little 1kg-3kg crays hundreds and hundres walking over the coral out in the open ledges full of them.one overhang was like a horror movie they were hanging off the ceiling waiting to pounce. Here are some sounder pics off the lump showing caves and large overhangs.I will edit the video and have it up i a few days

This is a large overhange 3m hige and 3-4 metres deep

This one is a cave with a large crack running east across the lunp ,the yellow through the midle is the crack

opening to a large cave

Nice work Paul like the way you've got the sounder shot then the underwAter photo looks identical. Is this the sort of ground u get all your duhies on. What sort of bottom time do u get in 30-40 meteres and do u have a pony bottle half way up. Nice work again on the photos thanks for putting them up for us all to see.

Yes 40m is a deep dive wouldn't want things to go wrong.Jesse did well no probs ,takes it all in his stride.Have got some better lumps out there so the next good day will hit another and get some more video .Im hoping to drop onto 30 -40 dhuies in a school and get some pics that would be tops .The lump Jesse got his 20kg the other week will be next on the list 17mile out.41m up to 35m but hold good numbers of fish.

The sounder pic compaired to the under water shot are nearly identical and should make a few of the "sounders cannot show caves" crowd think again.

Good report Paul.

Now I understand the sounder visions

Mon, 2010-10-18 02:49

As a 'newby' to using a 'sounder' all I can say is W O W Embarassed

When seeing that series of sounder photo's then the actual photo of the area, makes sense to me how they look from the vision shown on a sounder.

THANK YOU, for the visions you have shown & I also await the videoWink

Just add a seadoo with a video mount

Tue, 2010-10-19 12:18

And you can rapidly explore the areas -

And a big thanks thanks Paul for confirming what i have been saying since the very introduction of digital sounders - with correctly adjusted (read LESS) gain you can easily distinguish caves, overhangs and holes and even distinguish bottom types from mud to hard coral colour sounder or not - trouble is most fisho's run way way too much gain and the signal "fills in" all of those fish holding structures hiding them

Top work !

You are spot on with the gain settings .Most people are told to run the gain as high as you can without clutter. My gain will go to 100 I run it at 40,and as you can see I don't have any probs with bottom or fish.
