4k or 5k for Snapper

Looking for a reel to match a nice rod I've found and am tossing up between putting a 4000 or 5000 shimano reel on it in either a Stradic, Sustain or Biomaster to chase snapper with soft plastics. One of the models has the 4k $100 cheaper than the 5k so I'd like to see if anyone is running with a 4k and wish they'd gone the 5k. I believe the only difference is the spool.

when it come to the Stradic FJ the difference with the 5000  is the larger spool along with the larger 'jigging' style handle knob.

Far superior reel than the 4000 IMO.

Shouldn't make too much of a difference for snapper, you're never going to get spooled on a 4000 or 5000 sized reel by a pinky on a boat, I guess the other species you might encounter or target with the reel will inlfuence the decision.

I would personally go the 5000, the only loss on the 4000 is a couple grams, and is probably more versatile

My favourite snapper reel is a 4000 Twinpower. Also caught plenty of big(15kg+) sambos and mulloway. I can get almost 300m of 20lb braid on it.

Either size will handle snapper and most bycatch just depends on your budget, the $100 bucks you save getting the 4000 could put line on it.

I've got a 4000FJ

Punches above its weight, but i'll go for a new 5000 to get the most out of the Crostage Majorcraft rod it's on. Really just a matter of line capacity, as someone else said.

 I run a stradic fj 5000 on

Wed, 2015-08-19 16:31

I run a stradic fj 5000 on my jibging rod and landed a 97 cm pb pink snapper.  5000 is definitely suitable.   I have also run a 4000 sienna and landed some decent size rankins up to 60 cm, and similar size pinks.  Havent landed much bigger than 60 cm on tbe 4000 but havent lost much either, so i may just never have hooked the bigger ones.

I certainly love the stradic.  Great mid priced reel imo.

FJ has been replaced?

Replaced with FX(?) slightly more expensive, but apparently more in common with Stella. I'll be getting one of those.

5k Without a doubt. Pe 2-4 rod and you have a nice all round brawling outfit. But buy something of reasonable quality.

Ended up getting a 5000 Biomaster with the AR70S Catalina. Should have enough balls to deal with most bycatch
