4WD TYRES

Need to replace tyres on two 4WDs
One is a Pajero (265/70 R16)
Other is Hilux (205/80 R16)
Any recommendations?
Cruiser mates swear by BF All Terrains as they reckon they get 120000km plus out of a set.
also looking at Coopers.
Pajero tows the horse float and does some sand work so 80% on 20 % offroad tyre configuration.
Hilux is about 50/50 tyre configuration.
Thanks in advance

got coopers on the pootrol,
got coopers on the pootrol, no complaints at all. I had AT's on and went to the more road/sand oriented ones when I replaced the front. Rears are still going strong with 80000km on them. Had BF's on all my 4wd's before this one and no complaints either. 120000 is a bit of a stretch though unless they only do long highway trips. UNcle used to run them on a 100 series that he did 400,000km in in western qld and they were well rooted by 100,000 and that was all onroad long highway trips.

yeh always thought
120 000kms was strecthing but then again they mostly do highway runs.....
I used to work out bush working very remote and always 4WDiving and max I would get is 30 000km. But to different extremes really.
still 80000-100000km is good
cheers

Coopers
we get 85 to a hundred thousand k's out of Coopers on our Patrols with a 75-25 road/offroad type. Beats the Bridgestones they come with which we generally get 60-70k out of.

Size does matter
With what ever you chose consider diameter and width ratio and do't fall into the the wider the better trap. diameter can in crease the tyre foot print and raise clearance a little but there is always a trade off. ALSO consider road noise if that is an issue to.Some of those aggresive tread patterns can really howle. ahhwooooo.

Some (hopefully) useful weblinks
I don't have massive experience with a wide range of tyres, Damian but what I can tell you is that I often find tyre choice bewildering, both with tyre availability and contradicting opinions. For instance, I hear great things about the longevity of the Coopers and then I hear that they get staked easily offroad. That is just one example.
As for what type of tyres, you would probably want a less aggressive AT tyre for the Pajero and a more aggressive All Terrain/mild Mud Terrain for your Hilux. As to which one, well, those mentioned already seem to be the most talked about (The BF Goodrich AT and the Coopers). Mickey Thomson (which is owned by the same company that produces Cooper Tyres and Dick Cepek Tyres) have recently released a more road-oriented version of their ATZ- the"5-rib" ATZ. Looked interesting.
Some links:
http://www.offroaders.com/tech/AT-MT-Tires/ -mainly Mud Terrains but they review a few All-Terrains as well. Plus they have a forum for reader feedback on all the tyres (US site).
I will update this a little later with more links, inshaa'Allaah.
David.

thanks guys
agree bart man with diameter. that conversation can depend on terrain you most often encounter. i have worked out bush for years and both have pro/cons but personal preference i suppose.
personall don't see the need to change my slim original hilux tyres to Fats. money better spent on fishing. fats can work better in sand /mud but tyre pressure works the best.... agressive tyre treads also reduces braking distance as less tyre on road for friction.....lean't some good lesson there living in Darwin and the wet season rains.....fats better handling, more juice etc... tubless etc...
thanks David. now what you mean about bewildering choice. thought i would ask for some help online. got a fair idea on tread patterns and at this stage interested in longevity. i find info from users better than any salesmen....unforunately don't see much of MY (ha ha) outback living south but still wont to head back...... appreciate the links though
at this stage leaning towards the Coopers

I have a set of BFG
I have a set of BFG A/T's that have gone over 100,000kms, still a bit on them. Plenty of sand and highway driving, not so much mud and rock hopping. BFG's and Coopers are bit like the L/Cruiser vs Patrol debate, people will like what they like and generally stick to it.

Coopers for my Hilux
Have a hilux myself. Used to live in the Northern Territory(any tyres up there cop a hammering!) and have had Bridgestone desert duelers, lasted about 25000km, then tried wranglers, got a bit better 30000km. Then got a set of coopers, did 27000km up in the N.T with them and have since done another 32000km since moving back to Perth, and they still look in good order so so far 59000km for my coopers. When its time to replace these i will definitly go the same set of coopers might cost a bit but well worth it i reckon.

Had bf a/t on my last 100
Had bf a/t on my last 100 series found that they like to pick up rocks and had a blow out with one. Coopers are a excellent tyre ,with one of the best punture resistance rated by a 4wd magazine, but saying that i run bridgestones again and am more than happy with them.

more good info
i have tried the desert duelers on my hilux before and found they suffer dearly if you dont watch the tyre pressure religously..... and didn't like them personally out bush... no good grip
not to fussed about price ATM.
looks like Coopers still just in front

Warranty?
Don'T the cooper's give 100,000km warranty if the warranty conditions are followed, IE every so many kms they get rotated and aligned...

coopers
damo we got coopers ht 265/70/r16's on the rear of our mitsi challenger..... that car gets used mostly for towing horse float also and had no probs at all.... only done maybe 10000-15000 on them but still like new.... i know they have just gone up in price as i have just priced them for the front now.... i think it was 285 or 295 each...
also know someone who is in the 4wd club... he uses the at cooper and swears by them...he's retired now and does a lot of caravan towing and he still gets about 90000 out of them..... needless to say he replaces them with the same....
cheers Jes

that would be good. sounds like the type she wants. we will both be in Bunbury over the Chrissy period.
my misses mum owns a horse stud in Boyanup and her partner is a farrier/registered trainer. small world so you may know them. she breeds thoroughbreds for racing.
If i call her horses nags then i am in big trouble....ha ha
I'll send you a PM
cheers

Yokohama warranty
I've never had them but believe that Yokohama offer a very nice warranty on their tyres.
I have also heard that the Cooper warranty is null and void if they are taken off road?? (may be a load of hogswash but worth asking the question and seeing it on paper.)

the thread was posted back in December 2008.....
ended up getting coopers for both vehicles. Very good tyres and wont be going anything else. Much better tread and improved handling. Well worth the price and much better off road.
appreciate the advice though
