Installing Transducer
Submitted by Matt T on Tue, 2009-09-22 12:53
G'day all- wanting some tips on installing a new transducer on the boat. Do we drill into the hull and if so how do we go about that? Any advise would be great as I really have limited knowledge in this kind of thing.

tranny
first you have to figure out where you need it to go then it pays to mount a block to the hull so that most of your drilling is not into the hull, i think there is quite a few tips here and on the net depends on what type of transducer and set up ,is your hull ali or glass?? what sorta sounder you runnin matt? cheers craig

Hull is Glass mate
Also should have mentioned that there is a transducer there already but it looks like it's attached straight to the hull with no block. Would you glue the block on?

New sounder
New one is just a hummingbird wide that I bought of a bloke on here. We are replacing a sounder that still displays everything in blocks like 1980's LCD.

Take the boat for a spin
Take your boat out for a spin and get up to plain.
You need to have a mate driving.
As the boat is going along look out the back (make sure its a good mate) and you should see a bit off water that is clear about 500mm off the leg to the right.
Mark the middle of the clear water (a strip that should have a greenish tinge to it).
This is the posi the ducer should be.
Make sure the boat is "flat" in the water. This is because you want the ducer to the right of the boat as your prop will push water over it, if on the other side and you and your mate will be on the right hand side whilst doing this.

As there is already
As there is already a tranny there - I don't need to worry about where to place it as it worked fine before with the old sounder so I'll use the same spot. More wondering how to attach it to the hull?

screws
Mate, I would be getting some 10 gauge 316 stainless self tapper screws and a tube of sikaflex. drill a pilot hole first, load up with sikaflex and screw home. Job done!

Picture
If your getting a good picture from your old transducer Matt take particular note of its height in relation to the bottom of the hull. Try and replicate this i.e. bottom face of transducer level with hull or slightly lower. If its to low you will get a nice roostertail out the back when travelling at speed, to high and you'll only get interference.
