Abrohlos Day Trip Jig Sesh...
Hi crew well with the weather looking the best I had seen it for a long time plans were set for a 3 boat mission to head to Abrohlos Islands for a day run earlier this week, a quick chat to fellow members bouttime and ringy and a couple of other mates saw the plan come together..
The plan for my boat was to go get our jig on (plastics and jigs) and maybe chase a few bait balls if the opportunity presents it self...
We meet at the Gero boat ramp at 5.45am and were underway by 6.30am, the run accross was insane with no swell to speak of and flat seas we were at Hummock Island and dropping a jig to the bottom in 40m before 8am..
The conditions were the best I have seen for a long time and were like this for the whole day...
First mark of the day the HDS looks good and sure enough my 80gm jig is crunched and up comes this healthy Dhu caught on PE 2...
While I was busy battling my Dhu Mak aka Fishncrazy hooks up on placcy and lands his first Coral Trout for the day which was to be one of many..
Next drop and Mak's plastic is smashed before it even hits the bottom and this fish is doin it's best to stitch him up, after a short but tough fight Mak has this 640mm Trout esky bound...
The next hour or 2 was spent sounding for ground and catching numerous Coral Trout, Dhu Fish, Baldys and a couple Pink Snapper with countless double hookups through out the morning...
By mid morning the conditions were really starting to turn it on with the ocean turning into a giant mirror...
Things had started to go a little quiet wth the sun up high and very little movement, every now and then one of us would get severly bricked by a thumper Trout in 12-20m... when all of a sudden I looked over the side as a massive school of Grey Mackerel swims by just a few meters below the boat...
I quickly drop down my jig a quick wind up and BANG I had this fellow singing that song on PE 1..
Not long after Mak had his placcy crunched by a serious Mack and has a battle on his hands... I look over to the other boys in the Haines in the background who are casting poppers and watch as a nice Macky rise's and smashes there popper.. Great fun...
Everyone is hooked up to good Macks and getting smoked was a great little sesh, we managed to catch and release 4 Grey Macks in total 2 each to plastics and jigs...
I did throw a bullchop at the school but was out of luck enticing a surface strike...
After the hot Macky sesh I dropped down a plastic and nailed this tasty Baldy good fun on PE 2 and was dispatched into the esky soon after...
Another solid 600mm Trout that fell victim to a Squidgy Shad worked well off the bottom...
As the arvo went on we continued to jig up countless Coral Trout, Dhu fish, Sambo's and Baldys...
Bouttime and crew doin there thing not far off Hummock Island...
A quick underwater snap of a Whale that was duck diving just meters under the boat... a touch freaky but it's amazing what ya see out there...
Late in the arvo after catching plenty of smaller models Mak comes up trumps with this solid plastic munchin Dhu...
And to finish out the day after being bricked badly on his placcy out fit I convinced Mak to drop down a jig on PE 3 and 4 or 5 drops later he finds himself connected to yet another good Trout, not bad for his first shot at butterfly jigging...
What a top day with soooo many solid fish caught our arms, wrists and backs were thankful to be going home.. We set sail for home around 5.10pm and were back at the ramp by 6.45pm..
The ground we fished was mainly between 12 - 42m and the fish that were not kept were all released fine with only 3 or 4 needing the release weight..
It was great to get out with some mates and share the experiance we will be doin it again soon I'm sure..
As always cheers for taking the time to read...
