ABU 10 Electrolysis
Submitted by bushpig on Wed, 2008-10-29 07:22
After suggestions on how to prevent further electrolysis of the side plates on an ABU 10?
Stripped it down for a service, and noticed a couple of small spots electrolysis on the inside of the end plates.
Reel is washed off with fresh water after every outing, and gets a regular strip, clean and lube each year, along with the occasional spray with innox or lanotec, which raises a second question - any pointers for which is the better spray to use for reel maintenance?
Reel is normally left mounted on rod - Fuji DPS reel seat on an older Ugly Stick

don't know how true this one is but have been told Oil in Spray cans for cooking is supposed to be very good, Bob uses sewing machine oil on our reef masters but don't use rods much, he just does what you do hose with fresh water etc.

Unfortunately, saltwater
Unfortunately, saltwater intrusion is what lets a lot of Abus down, as long as when your washing down that the hose is set on fine mist, your doing all the right things Bushie and Inox is a terrific product externally. Internally I use, sparingly, Diawa reel oil (small pen with the steel needle) on the bearings, bushes, spool axle and level wind worm and the blue Daiwa grease (in the squishy pack) on all cogs screws and anywhere steel meets ali including existing corroded areas. Just a smear is all. Point to keep in mind is if the oil or grease gets into the drag you'll have to order new washers, even the new carbon fibre wet drags are affected cos the greases are dissimilar. I have thought about using the anode strips Owner bring out for their hooks on the side plates but haven't got around to it yet. Nothing beats pulling the side plate off, cleaning her out oand reapplying the grease whlie your having a beer. Hope this helps.
Cheers Mick

Product called duralac
Supposed to stop two different metals reacting causing electrolysis, used on aluminium boats when putting stainless screws with ally, definately slows it down but would'nt say it stops it all together.

Would definately work in
Would definately work in close proximity situations such as screws and cogs next to side plates and I'll be giving it a go thanks diji. Unfortunately most corrosion in my experience is taking place where the steel is already pressed into the ali. Also got to watch the corrosion under the plate that slides back and forth when you disengage and engage the reel, usually give this a smear if I know its had a drink (when in the rod holder etc) or service time (every 6 months for me). Cheers Col #2, comes with the territory being an ABU fan.

Thanks all, cuppla good
Thanks all, cuppla good ideas to try out - only time will tell.
I've always used a good quality disc brake wheel bearing grease - you can get small tubs at any servo or auto shop. It doesn't "melt" or dry out, and doesn't seem to release any oil.
I had heard before that Innox wouldn't "taint" your line if you accidentally got any on it, so have used that for the last cuppla seasons.
Must be some truth in it, still seem to catch fish.
