Advice on Rod
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2021-07-28 22:08
I'm going to buy my boy a Y6 graduation pressie and am thinking a nice combo would be something he'll keep for many many and get heaps of joy out of. He's taken a liking to my Type J/5000 Biomaster or Catalina/5000 Biomaster combos which gives me anxiety when he uses them so looking for something similar.
Budget is around $500 and probably go a 5000 Stradic so can anyone recommend a rod around the $150‐200 mark.
The Saltist 18 PE2-4 rods look like they will fit the bill so has anyone used one of those?
Cheers JF

I havent used the rod
I havent used the rod mentioned, but i do have a few of the eupro shogun rods in the pe 2. I havent really treated them well and they should’ve have broken on me multiple times but they are still going strong. I've used them hard for the past 4 years and they are great for the price paid.

I dropped into Tackleworld
I dropped into Tackleworld today an picked up a Shimano Jewel (JEW621JSP) which is a PE 1.5-3 and nice and light and looks great aesthetically so has anyone used one of these?
At the moment I am sitting on a decision between this and the NS S583. I didn't much care for the really thick foam grip and heavy feel on the PE3 Saltist.

Let’s hope it stays on the boat.
If he's a chip off the old block chances are it's going to take a swim one day. A lanyard might be a good investment Frosty...:D

Just a heads up with Stradic
Just a heads up with Stradic Reel (as I've just gone thru this).
I also lashed out and brought a Stradic, most money I've ever spent on a Fishing Reel -lol.
The Reel became very noisy, and I've put up with it, thinking it's a new reel and it well get better- "wrong".
The Line Roller Bearing failed, and you can do a search( wish I'd done this sooner). It appears to be a common problem with Stradic.
May not happen to you- hope not. But no big deal- just replace with new bearing.
Cheers.

Was thinking of getting a new outfit along these lines and will probably get a 4000 or 5000 Stradic for it. I would like it to be a bit of an allrounder to also be able to throw topwater lures up north etc. Any suggestions for a rod that will cover all the bases? I guess it just needs to be longer than say Frosty's NS Blackhole pe3 s583?
Cheers

Check out the Diawa Demon blood range Dave, I've got 4 of them at different ratings and literally can't fault them. Caught everything from Hezzas, Big Dhu and up north reds etc.

Hey guys I'm now going to
Hey guys I'm now going to buy a Stradic 5000SW and found a rod that I bought off a user here that I had forgotten about and was wondering if it would fit my intended use. It's an Azusa ALS702M-CFB PE 2-4. I can't find anything on line about the rod but it's probably worth a shot. Intended use is a bit of lure casting, shallow bottom fishing, maybe some light jigging. Stated lure weight is 40 - 80 grams (I think).
Interested in others thoughts on this. I'm always up for buying more gear but right now there are other priorities.

For what it's worth Dave I can't fault the Azusa's , have a few in the arsenal and they are pure quality rods. It should pair up beautifully with the Stradic with that lure weight range.

Thanks Andy. I bought it
Thanks Andy. I bought it quite a while back and forgot it was there! Paid bugger all for it too. The tip is probably a bit stiffer than I'd like for smaller lures but I have a really sweet custom 6kg outfit for that anyway. The rod says max drag 12kg and that's the same for the Stradic so pretty well suited. Is the only difference between the 5000 and the 6000 in the spool? If so maybe the 6000 is the go.

I answered my own question.
I answered my own question. 6000 has same body but slightly bigger spool. For only 10g extra weight and $20 I went with more capacity on the 6000.

Jigging question
Okay now that I have the rod and reel sorted, I just need to ask a dumb question. The rod is rated PE 2 - 4 max drag of 12kg. The reel is spooled with 30 pound braid and the reel rated to max drag of 12kg. So far it all sounds right. The rod is rated for lure weights from 40 - 80g. Does that refer to any lures or could I use slightly heavier jigs? I know that 80g max will apply to casting lures but was wondering if there was some tolerance for slow-pitch jigging? I've never done any jigging and this is not meant to be a jigging outfit but I'm going north in a while and may want to do some shallow water jigging.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Without suggesting I'm any sort of jigging Sensei, I'd suggest you would be ok using pretty much any of the jigs you would use in local waters, bar the super heavy deep drop jigs. It is just that your rod is not ideal to make the jig talk. Although, and possibly the result of my lack of skills, I find I get most my hits when the Jig is on the fall, doing the little dance the manufacturer has designed it to do.

Thanks Selthy. I know the rod wont maximise the jigs action but on a 23 foot boat with 3 blokes for a week we can only take so much gear, hence trying to get outfits that can serve more than one purpose. If I have some success and enjoy the jigging caper I'll look at a specialist jigging rod down the track. I just don't want to bust this one using jigs that are too heavy!

Nothging more than 100gm Dave and you'll be fine, just depends on what depth and current.

Thanks Andy. I don't think we'll do anything very deep so I'll stick with 100g max. I also want to give vibes a try but that will definitely need to be pretty shallow and not a lot of current.

That's the way I did it. Use what I have until I worked out what I like and what I really want... I got hooked on jigging.
If concerned about jig weights or rod action, remember there are different techniques www.anglers-secrets.com/slowpitch_variations/ possibly a long-fall technique may be useful if you felt you needed to go up in jig size to stay verticle.
